To Audi A5 or Volvo S60 T6....

I really can't decide. I LOVE them both. I'm slightly leaning towards the Volvo because I have one now and it's been fantastic. At the same time I do like change. :jameo: I'll be in the market for a new car in the next few months. I need help! :cds:

Audi is high maintenance. Lots of little quirks with them, so be prepared to deal with them, just like I am with my VW (re-badged A4).

I've heard that but I've also heard they've gotten better over recent years. I have had very minimal problems with my 04 S60 :knockingonwood: and it has 160K on it. Sensability is telling me to go with the Volvo, they're a little cheaper, I know they're good cars. I think the sportier look (2 doors) of the A5 is sucking me in.

Great car, don't get me wrong. Just want you to know going in what you may be in for.

Example of common problems:
Turbo has oil issues
Valve covers leak
Exhaust flex pipes break
ABS module has wiring failures that requires removal, ship off for rebuild ($100-150) and replace (or remove, buy new part $400-600 and replace)
Entire front end has to come off for timing belt change between 60-100K miles (closer to 60K is better than risking 100K

That being said, there are GREAT enthusiest forums where you can find the info to diagnose and fix them (or to find a mechanic to fix them for you).

Mine is an 01, but the problems I mentioned are up through the current Passat, which is still an AUDI in VW badging.

Go with the C30 or C70

I've often heard people say that Audis have issues but I really haven't seen that with mine. I have almost 175k on it and have only done general maintenance type stuff. Most major thing I've had to do to it was replace the turbo hoses last year as they had started collapsing sometimes when the turbo kicked in but they were still the original ones so it wasn't surprising they had started to break down.

Hate the way the C30 looks. Like the C70 a lot but I don't think they have a type R like the S60. Lemme go look....

Hmmm, you know, there are a couple of domestics in that class that might suit you and at a equal or better price point, and with better passenger accommodations.

It looks like AWD, and a good amount of power are what you are after so if you are really hung on a turbo V6, the Taurus SHO is a nice ride, or the new Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger can both be had with AWD, but of course come with a V8. I dont know what chevy has in that class anymore, now that the G8 is gone, appears that the Caddys are the only option, and those are a bit pricier.

Used to be levels of technology were lacking in domestics as opposed to the Euros, but its not like that any more. Advanced cruise, blind spot detection, telematics, all the bells and whistles, those can all be had on domestics in this class. I know some folks wont even look at domestics, but I think you owe it to yourself to at least take a couple for a spin, you might be surprised.

get another lexus isf (=

You know, another Lexus was my first consideration but I've heard awful things about them from people that have them. My old one is still my favortire car that I've ever had. I loved that beast!

So, just looked it over, and the domestics are actually the next size class up, in line with the S80. Which as you point out, doesn't have the R option. The Chrysler V8 AWDs come in close equal in handling and performance to the R, at about a 3-4K price reduction. The Ford would be a little slower, I think, at sea level anyway, but has a bit lower price also.

Problem is, domestic makers haven't caught on that high performance versions of mid-size sedans might sell.

I really like the way a couple of the domestics look but I worry about long term quality. A girlfriend of mine has the Caddy crossover thing, it's an 04 with less miles on it than my car and the interior is falling apart. My mom has a 2010 Expedition (the top of the line one) and it's been back in for repairs (granted all of it under warranty) several times. The CTS is a little big for me but I do like them a good deal.

Pixie, sounds like you're doing your research. If you really can't decide then it looks like it's time to put a spreadsheet together that lists all the options/features you care about - then you can give each one a priority/importance value and rate them for each vehicle. Calculate it out and you'll have your answer.

I know it sounds silly, but it allows you to weigh the importance of a feature - perhaps you think dependability is more important than a sporty look or gas mileage or cost, etc. You can always adjust and add more options as necessary. Helps you avoid those impulse purchases that I would usually fall into. Ya know, test drive a car b/c it looks f'in hot, drives great at first but then find out it falls apart and is unreliable. Hate to see that happen to ya.

Good luck and let us know what you decide on.
and when you are giving out rides

We loved our Audi (A4 Quattro) but maintenance was a PITA and ultimately caused us to get rid of it. I do miss it, though. My MIL just replaced her Infiniti G35 with a Jetta TDI that she LOVES.

I priced out a Taurus SHO AWD out of curiosity and just had to say no thank you. I finished up around the 43-44k mark. I'll take an Infiniti for that kind of money.
