In a few weeks I'll be getting the engine compression tested and hope to have good news - otherwise I'll be looking to buy a new engine, and I really can't afford that.

not that hard to rebuild a 350 .... and cheap

only requires time

Have probably a dozen 5.0s on both land and sea...my cruiser runs a pair of 318s...yep, thems some good motors. But there are more.

I was just randomly listing units that were probably manyfactured in the 10's of millions

I have a odd beast in the form of an IH 345 - I love the water pump feed that goes straight into the front of the heads

[odd unless you own an IH Truck or Bus]

Have built many 304s and 345s over the years but am now completely out of Scouts..sold the last one almost 6 years ago and just recently sent the pile of spare heads and blocks (and trans/t-case/axles) to the recyclers.

I have a 'hybrid' 1966 428/427 sitting here all rebuilt with no home...mebbe that would be a good one for the Suburban?

Heretic, you DO NOT put a Ford in a Chevy or vis versa ......

Adopt me please !
I have other means of transportation while it's being done. How much would parts and labor be for a job like that?

nevermind, the shop I am dealing with said that it would cost near as much as buying a re-manufactured one from Jasper which has a 100k mile warranty.

basic rebuild kits can be 200 - 400 bucks,

then machine shop labor

hot tank
Align bore

etc .....

if you tow a lot this maybe the time, for a different cam, that will give you a little more torque aka 'pull' for the same cost as the stock replacement

it really depends on what is reusable - some opt for a crate motor from a local parts place - I put in a V6 in my moms mini van in 2000

having a nice place to work like Gilligan does helps a lot

Yeah I have a Jasper in my 86 Wagoneer

I had a '64 Jeep Wagoneer, blew up the motor on that one. What a mess. 2 rods and the crank, blew a hole in the side of the case.

Anyway, turns out the replacement motor was an AMC 360, got it out of an old AMC sedan. Tranny was a GM Turbo 400. Talk about a bunch of thrown together parts...

I had a '64 Jeep Wagoneer ...

[more about Jeep than you ever wanted to know] :jet:

Yep .... starting in the 60's [CJ 5, 6, 7 and Commando era]

Jeep made a 4 cyl ... old WW II era flat head

bought all the tooling for the 225 Buick V6 in 1966 [the factory discovered a dealership in the Mid west replacing the flat head 4 cly with the 225 and how popular it was] - in 66 GM was getting out of the V6 business, so Kaiser / Jeep bought everything .... smartest move I have ever heard of a manufacturing doing - if you got an AUTO is was a Th 400 [although Kaiser did use a Borg Warner Cast Iron auto in the early days] Ford Style Starter, Brigs and Straton keys

in 1972 the V6 tooling was sold BACK to GM [how is that for irony] and AMC I6s and V8s being the standard in CJ's and Commandos [which only lasted to through the 73 model yr]

Wagoneer's and J Series PU had a ;

232 / 258 I6 AMC Motor
327 AMC Motor
350 Buick

in 1972 when Jeep was acquired by AMC - Wagons and PUs got AMC V8s but kept the TH 400 Auto Trans [used various T-XX manual Trans] in the mid 72 model yr AMC started using Torqueflite 904's and buy the early 80s was using the 727 in the Wagons and PUs

even after acquired by Chrysler in 84? the AMC 360 carried on in the 'Grand Wagoneer's until the end - with the smaller 'XJ' Cherokees getting the 4.0 I6

the TH 400s were the Buick, Olds, Pontiac bell housing not the more standard Chevy [square top version] there was also a 1 inch adapter for the fitting TH 400 to the AMC Bolt Pattern

[I could break it down to Transfer Cases and Axles - but I doubt you want to know that much]
