In My Opinion
What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time.
When the only people that existed were troglodytes...cave men...
cave women...Neanderthal...troglodytes.
Let's take the average
cave man at home, listening to his stereo. Sometimes he'd get up,
try to do his thing. He'd begin to move, something like this:
"Dance...dance". When he got tired of dancing alone, he'd look
in the mirror: "Gotta find a woman gotta find a woman gotta find a
woman gotta find a woman". He'd go down to the lake where all the
woman would be swimming or washing clothes or something. He'd look
around and just reach in and grab one. "Come here...come here".
He'd grab her by the hair. You can't do that today, fellas, cause
it might come off. You'd have a piece of hair in your hand and she'd
be swimming away from you (ha-ha). This one woman just lay there,
wet and frightened. He said: "Move...move". She got up. She was a
big woman. BIG woman. Her name was Bertha. Bertha Butt. She was one
of the Butt sisters. He didn't care. He looked up at her and said:
"Sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me
sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me!". She looked down on him.
She was ready to crush him, but she began to like him. She said
(falsetto):
"I'll sock it to ya, Daddy". He said: "Wha?". She said (falsetto):
"I'll sock it to ya, Daddy". You know what he said? He started it way
back then. I wouldn't lie to you. When she said (falsetto)
"I'll sock it to ya, Daddy" he said "Right on! Right on! Hotpants!
Hotpants! Ugh...ugh...ugh".

Common sense ain't common
The Mid-Atlantic States have been lucky. I have a feeling we are going to get hit really good soon.

I've not been here long but aren't we a bit overdue for one? Only hurricane we ever left town on when we lived in VA Beach (2000-2004) was Isabel.
(and before anyone calls me a wuss, yes we left cause I was not about to ride out a hurricane with my now 8 yr old son and my now 11 yr old autistic son while my husband rode it out somewhere on a submarine :faint:)

Yes we are due. It's been a few years. Unfortunately, the forecasters are absolutely HORRIBLE!! :lmao: Last couple years they predicted record seasons that fizzled.

You're no wuss. Hurricanes suck. I think I'm going to get a generator this year. :yay:

I am so very blessed
I had a hard run, runnin' from your window.
I was all night running, running, Lord I wonder if you care,
I had a run in, run around, and run down.
Run around the corner, corner, Lord run smack in to a tree.

I had to move, really had to move,
That's why if you please, I am on my bendin' knees,
Bertha don't you come around here anymore.

Dressed myself in green, I went down unto the sea.
Try to see what's goin' down, try to read between the lines.
I had a feelin' I was fallin', fallin', fallin',
I turned around to see,
Heard a voice al callin', Lord you was comin' after me.

I had to move, really had to move,
That's why if you please, I am on my bendin knees,
Bertha don't you come around here anymore.

Ran into a rainstorm, I ducked back into a bar door.
It's all night pourin', pourin', pourin',
Lord but not a drop on me.
Test me, test me,
Test me, test me, test me,
Why don't you arrest me?
Throw me in to the jailhouse,
Lord until the sun goes down, 'till it goes down.

I had to move, really had to move,
That's why if you please, I am on my bendin' knees,
Bertha don't you come around here anymore.

I had to move, really had to move,
That's why if you please, I am on my bendin' knees,
Bertha don't you come around here anymore.

We're overdue.

The Chesapake Bay, The Eastern Shore, New Jersey, New York, Delaware are all due this year for the Long Island 80-year event.

Hurricanes usually hit mid-September, and I'll be in Dover and Millville (both close to coast) in back-to-back weeks during that wonderful timeframe. :faint:

You're not a wuss, hurricanes suck. :boo:

The seasons haven't been as active, but the hurricanes have been stronger.

If a hurricane were to take a path that Isabel did this year, we'd be straight-screwed, and it wouldn't feel good.

good move on leaving. nothing wuss about it.
I rode out a couple when I lived in Sandbridge from 81 ~ 91

The last two years, we were EXTREMELY lucky. All of that has been because of upper-level wind shear.

That wind-shear's still in the Caribbean, but there's not an overwhelming amount of shear across the entire Atlantic Ocean like the last two years.

It doesn't look like we're gonna be as lucky this year. :ohwell:

You're not a wuss! I've been in them with my 2 boys and it's not fun! My older one still has trouble dealing with bad storms after the hurricanes we dealt with in FL. He's not OCD, but gets that way about the storms. It's nervewracking. (for him and for me when he's like that!) We were in Va. Beach and FL and have "only" been through Cat. 2 or less and those were bad enough.

BREAKING NEWS: Tropical Storm Bertha forms in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa

from NOAA:
How is this "Breaking News"?

Tornados, POTUS being shot, stuff like that is breaking news. A tropical storm developing off of Africa is not breaking news. It'll be 2 - 3 weeks before this would have any impact on SoMD, if any. The track already looks like it won't see the US.

Food for thought: We have not been directly hit by a hurricane force storm in over 100 years.
Those really "big" storms were just tropical storms or depressions. Some of those were storms hundreds of miles away.
If a hurricane force storm comes riding up the Bay - My dog, kids and I are gone to higher and drier land!

You're right. Our geography helps to protect us from the big ones. Any hurricane that comes our direction is normally weakened to a TS by the time it reaches SoMD.

I've been through a couple of these "lesser" storms. I remember Camille dropped enough rain to fill up Rock Creek (Montgomery County) to the level that it moved the East West Highway bridge (six lanes) off its foundations.
Guess we are lucky that Va. and the Carolinas stick out further.
I'm getting my gear ready; just in case.

I don't see Isabel on there.

1972 Hurricane Agnes on June 21-23. Widespread and in some places record flooding wrought one of the
state's most destructive natural disasters. Many dams menaced. Many roads closed, particularly in central
Maryland. Thousands of evacuations. An ecological calamity for the Chesapeake Bay.
1975 The remnants of Hurricane Eloise pelted the state from Sept. 23-26. Heavy flooding throughout
central Maryland.
1979 Hurricane David produced a tornado outbreak on Sept. 5-6. Gales throughout central Maryland. The
Baltimore metropolitan area experienced disastrous flash flooding.
1985 Hurricane Gloria tracked about 50 miles offshore on Sept. 27. Extensive damage to the Ocean City
boardwalk. Several inches of rain fell on the eastern half of Maryland. An offshoot to Hurricane Juan caused
severe flooding in western Maryland and along the Chesapeake Bay on Nov. 4-5.
1996 Hurricane Fran brought gales and heavy rain to the state on Sept. 5. A track west of the Chesapeake
Bay and lengthy high winds caused severe flooding along the bay and lower Potomac River.
1999 Hurricane Floyd dumped more than 10 inches of rain on the Eastern Shore and along the
Chesapeake Bay on Sept. 16-17. Chestertown collected 14.00 inches. Annapolis had 11.60 inches. Floyd's eye
passed through Ocean City, with a low barometric pressure of 28.88 inches.
2003 Hurricane Isabel tracked through the state on Sept. 18, bringing widespread gales. More than nine
hours of high winds created extreme flooding along the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries. Isolated
gusts near hurricane force in the Chesapeake region. Record power outages. A huge loss of trees.
2004 Hurricanes Frances (Sept. 8), Ivan (Sept 17) and Jeanne (Sept. 28) brought tornado outbreaks and
flooding, particularly to central and western Maryland.
