Two Mommy's --

rwethereyet

Yeah, okay.
So I pick my 3 year old daughter up from Daycare yesterday and on the way home, she says "So&So has 2 mommy's". She wasn't questioning it, she just made the comment.

I wasn't sure what to say to her. I found myself thinking too much into it. First thought was the parents were lesbians. So I told her, some kid's have 2 mommy's, some kids have 2 daddy's and other kids are like her and have a mommy and a daddy. Then I thought, well maybe the mother and father aren't together and the father is remarried and the child has a Mother and a Step-Mother. She's only three, so I didn't want to confuse her with all the possiblities and didn't say anything else about it.

She said something about it again last night. So I know she is "thinking" about it. But without knowing the child's situation, I wasn't sure how to explain it to her.

I am sitting here this morning thinking about it and the fact that when she first said it, I "assumed" the parents were lesbians. And my response was that there are some kids that have 2 mommy's and I was pretty much trying to make it sound like it was okay and that it didn't make So&So different. But my in-laws are "old schooled" and I could see if she had of made the comment to them. What would they have told her? I would hope they would be decent about it and not make it sound bad so that she would go to daycare thinking this little kid is different. But I'm not sure.

I honestly don't agree with the whole lesbian, gay thing, but I know it's a way of life and we see it more and more. I don't want her to think differently of kids because of it.

Let's say the parents were lesbians, I'm sure some of you have experienced this. What do you tell your child? Was it okay for me to say, some people have 2 mommy's, some people have 2 daddy's and some people have a mommy and a daddy? Or should I have said something else?

One time the boy made the comment that he had 2 mommies. He was talking about his mom and me. I wouldn't assume that the two women in question are lesbians.

With a three year old it would have gone like this:

Her: Heather has two Mommies!
Me: Cool!

I think that is enough info. for a 3-year-old. You are simply stating a fact and there is no need to explain the why's and wherefore's at this age because it will confuse her. If she pushes, just say, "I don't know", because that is the honest answer. She'll learn as she gets older. Kids don't need to know everything before they're five.

My wife and I have cusdity of my 2 oldest kids 14 & 12, and have 3 year old togather. The hardest thing that I have ever done was to explain that Bubba & Sissy go and visit their other Mommy every other week.

If she brings it up again, you could always just say "Well isn't she/he lucky" Whether you really think so or not, doesn't matter, your daughter isn't old enough to understand too much detail at this point.

I know a woman whose 6 or 7 year old daughter told her teacher (about 20 years ago) that her Daddy had dark skin.

Teacher was concerned about the treatment the girl might get once her classmates parents found out about her mixed race heritage. She was quite relieved on parent-teacher night when she met dad, who wasn't a black man, like she was expecting, but an Italian, whose skin was certainly darker than Mom's.

You can't make any assumptions about things like that. We adults tend to talk around things like that and kids may say the same thing with much different meaning.

I expect it is much more likely that this child has a mother and step-mother, rather than lesbian mothers, because that is the more common scenario.

Actually, I find it quite sad that children say "Little Suzi Q has 2 Mommies". Suzi Q's Daddy and Mommy should have thought about that before they had Little Suzi Q. If the 2 Mommie's are lesbians, I don't want to get started on my soapbox!!!

Please get on your soapbox. Tell us how a child suffers by having 2 mothers to love them. Tell us how a child suffers by having 2 mothers that love children so much that they intentionally had a child. While you are at it, tell us how the sperm that got killed while being artificially inseminated deserve a funeral. Please do.

How do you know Little Suzi's mommy had help from a daddy?
