Birmingham man arrested in Woodlawn post office robbery | al.com

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A 45-year-old Birmingham man has been charged in the Thursday afternoon robbery of a Woodlawn post office branch, Birmingham police announced tonight.

Kevin Wade Peoples has been charged with robbery of a federal institution, attempted murder, felony eluding police, felony leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, and resisting arrest.

Sgt. Johnny Williams gave this account:

On Thursday at 4:50 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to a robbery at the post office at 5310 1st Ave. N.

The suspect passed a note to the teller demanding money and implied he had a weapon. The suspect fled in a pickup truck with cash from the register.

East Precinct sergeants found the truck at an abandoned house in the 5200 block of Messer Airport Highway. As officers approached on foot, the suspect attempted to strike them with the vehicle.

As he fled, the suspect struck a vehicle at the intersection of Georgia Road and Messer-Airport Highway. An occupant of the vehicle suffered a broken leg.

The suspect was taken into custody in the 4900 block of Messer-Airport Highway after a short chase on foot.

I've never had a package handled by the USPS to be undelivered or misplaced.

But I can't tell you the number of times that the damn dog next door has gotten into our delivered packages and scattered the contents and packing materials across our yard. We have lots of packages delivered, and not one of them has come into our house unscathed by that dog. :burning:

I was wondering how the wind blew those pink satin panties into my yard, I will return them to you asap, I will have to wash the stains out first, sorry :killingme

I wish UPS and FedEx still required signatures. I think all the delivery services have a "oh well its insured" attitude.

My mail has been messed up for years.

My grandfather worked at the main Post Office in DC for years (retired in 1966). He told stories back then of how the workers would steal and to never send cash thru the mail. Now that this is mentioned, I received 2 Christmas cards this year that had that clean cut on them. Just a small cut and I didn't think much of it at the time. Now it makes sense.

I've used the USPS for letters and packages, both domestic and abroad. Haven't had a problem with loss or damage. Most times the delivery is faster then expected.

Omigosh, I cannot even begin to tell you of the problems we've experienced with the USPS this last year.

The Reader's Digest version: A package, marked "fragile" arrived with softball sized holes in it. I was easily able to stick my arm inside the holes in the box. The USPS lady told me in a very snotty manner that the sender should have purchased the insurance.

We get a whole bunch of super late mail. Last year our black Friday ads showed up in December. Like, that late. It's still going on, we're just now getting Nov/Dec magazines and catalogs.

One day I came home from work and found the mail lady delivering mail, walking through the woods with her little rolley-luggage to get to each place like she sometimes does. I took my dog to the park, came back about an hour later and found a USPS tub of mail on our trashcans. I called the USPS to report it and they said they'd have someone out within 10 mins. I kept an eye on the box and saw someone drive up and take it at around the 10 min mark, assuming it was the USPS guy but then a guy claming to be the USPS guy showed up later. No uniforms, name tags, or anything on anyone.

I've complained a solid 10 times in the past year but have only gotten a reponse once, about the box of mail. It basically said that they couldn't find any more information on the box of mail so further silence on my part would indicate satisfaction with how the situation had been handled.

Again, I could go on and on. Are they not held accountable for their actions?

Been in Capitol Heights Facility

What a F%$#king waste, I had the opprtunity to be inside the Cap Heights facility when the changeover was taking place. Those people had only a hint of WTF was going on. All of them were complaining about the new procedures, but mail was slowly being loaded onto contractors box trucks, Then in comes a big supervisor and screws things up even worse.
Oh, and the mail is also handled by contractors that are not employed by the P.O. in case you didn't know that. There are many places along the route that packages can be pilfered.

I've had no problems having anything stolen or missing in the 40 years I have been mailing - have had a few letters damaged by automation, though.

However, with 600,000 employees, just a reasonable sampling of the workforce would no doubt represent society as a whole - with a proportionate share of bad apples working for the Service.

Many people are unhappy, believe me, not just a FEW.

We have always had horrendous mail delivery. We get several weekly periodicals and they routinely come out of order (last month we got the 2nd and 3rd week of December's issues before the first week of December's issue came). I received my Kohls coupons mid-December that had a "deliver by November 19th" stamp on it. The sale had already ended. I could go on and on. And they just keep raising the price of stamps and wondering why their business has dwindled to near nothing.

The only problem that I have with the post office down here is that they keep putting other people's mail in my home mailbox. I could see them making that mistake with one of my neighbors because things may stick together sometimes, but when it's mail for someone on a different street, and it happens regularly, you know they aren't paying much attention to what they're doing.
