Vista?

Nephew who is in the business says he likes it.

he's coming over here next week and was going to bring along one of his boxes to show me the system.

Make sure your system can handle it.
PC World spokesman Hamish Thompson said some retailers are banking on Vista to push customers toward the higher-end machines needed to run Vista _ which imposes such hardware requirements as 1 gigabyte of system memory, or RAM. Consumers will also need to upgrade older software and devices to work with Vista
Vista
I can't think of any reason I would want to change. I imagine it will be on the next 'putor I buy though.

1 gig of RAM just to run the operating system?! I think more people will be making the jump to Linux over the next few years.

My system passed their test.
but at the same time my video card, tv card, printer, raid drivers and sound failed.

so, I guess what the test meant to say is that, my system didnt pass.

Mine passed, with the exception of updating a few drivers. But I doubt I'll switch. I have had no problems with XP and don't feel the need to learn a new system. On top of all that, when I downloaded IE7 I had nothing but trouble! So if that's what I've got to look forward to with Vista, I'm not interested! Maybe by the time I need a new computer they will have all the bugs worked out of it. :howdy:

My system passes the test but a lot of my critical software doesn't.

Go figure that one out - MS comes out with a new OS that will require users to purchase new software OR require software developers to come up with a patch.

They did this with the new IE, too - it wasn't compatible with my Quickbooks.

I know nothing
Id wait for a few years or at least 2 service packs and a bunch of MS patches before I install it on anything I own.

I think they are hoping that people like me will upgrade to Vista. My new pc has a free upgrade that I must use by March 31st. I think I will wait til the last moment. I'd hate to have to do PC Restore again. :coffee:

:yeahthat: First release might as well be considered a Beta version.

I had Vista on a Pentium3/512MB RAM and I liked it. After a while, it got kind of slow and crashed a bit (usually, hardware tv tuner problems).

I wouldn't put Vista on anything under 1GB RAM. Since Vista is FAT (in size not partition), you'll need a large hard drive. I put it on a 40GB, I would reccomend having 120GB or larger though. Vista Ultimate uses 16GB minimum and won't install on anything under 40GB.

Chances are, you'll need a new machine for Vista. I beta tested Vista since July of 2005 and have really enjoyed the most recent release. It's stable. XP SP2, Windows 2000 are the only other stable, useable MS Operating systems. NT 4.0 was stable but crappy features.

Most programs I've tried work with Vista, just not with Aero glass.

I can tell you with 100% certainty: Office, Adobe, Macromedia Studio, FlashMX, Dreamweaver, Photoshop will work.

IE7 worked with everything we have in the system. Biggest problem is how Microsoft shoved it onto peoples' systems.

i continued to use 2000 a couple yrs after XP came out, until i got my hands on a dell recovery CD and could install it on a couple spare dell laptops i had acquired .....

Recovery CD = No Activation ....... hehehehe

I do not know about Vista and OEM's like Dell ..... MS will probably build it into OEM's to stop what I did .......

I just got the business upgrade through my MS Action Pack but I am in no hurry

This OS seems like it was rushed out the door. I've heard of a few issues with applications that are mainly the result of unstable drivers or the abomination that is IE 7. It appears the hardware vendors didn't have ample time to get their side of it together before Microsoft pushed it out the door. I think I'm waiting until at least SP1 unless I stumble on a free copy somewhere.
