The difference is that instead of going through a phone line, it's going through your cable internet line.
Okay, got it! :yay:

Now my question is, my internet goes out a LOT more often than my phone service. I'm assuming that if your internet goes out, you can't make or receive phone calls - is that correct?

Your Broadband connection goes out a lot?
VOIP won't work with dial up

Metrocast gets spotty now and then..

It will work without a hitch for moths, then it will be on and off for an entire week-end..

Just figure the time you need it the most, it's not going to work. Have a back up plan.

Adelphia.

I wouldn't say it goes out a "lot" - probably twice a month, let's call it. But sometimes it goes out for hours at a time. And then there are times when it's just blippy. My phone service has never gone out that I'm aware of, but I also use the internet significantly more than the phone, so maybe the phone goes out all the time and I'm just not aware of it.

My money is on the phone never goes out..

Did you ever use dial up for the internet? How many times did you lose the internet becuase the phone service was out??

I had Net2phone a few years ago and it was crummy voice quality and had drops outs or disconnects. It may have gotten better since, though.

David here at Somd.com had that for awhile, I think, and he hated it.

Someone in Ylexot's thread is saying they did NOT like vonage.. lot of dropped calls, delay to the point you are talking over each other etc..

It's in the Computer forum.. "I got Cable"

I had it a couple of years ago...back when it first came to this area I guess..and starting watching commercials on tv. Well, I liked the service..until I had an issue with 911 dialing. I tried it one day and much to my surprise it was a non-emergency number for 911..I flipped out..called vonage...spent over 3 hours on the phone with them. Within that time..I spoke to the vice president of the company and the president of 911 dialing for vonage. I was so upset that they never put enough details about 911 dialing in their information booklet that came with the router. I kept saying..what if my child had an emergency? How long would I have waited for actual 911 to pick up? I was so irritated with them...I cut off my service and never ever want to have them or any other company like them. 911 dialing shouldn't be a joke to companies like that...thats why the service is soooo cheap! I have my land line phone...I pay more but if there ever comes a time when I need to dial 911..I know I will get through...

1) You can use E911 with Vonage. You register your number through them and you will always be identified on 911 calls after that.

2) If your cable service goes out, you can have a number as back-up for free. It will auto-forward to that number when either Vonage itself is down or the cable is out. I have yet to see Vonage down... just my cable.

3) My phone calls tend to be clearer than the Googletalk, Voice IM type services.

4) You can do some interesting stuff with Vonage... such as setting up an extra phone number anywhere they have service for only an extra $4.99 a month. It will ring to you, but it could be a phone number in the middle of Alaska. This could be good if you want to make a local phone number for your family who all live in another city or something along those lines where you can make it cheap for them to avoid long distance. You can forward your phone calls anywhere without long distance charges. You can transfer a call anywhere. You can log in online and check phone logs, play voicemails, change forwarding, or do almost anything else to effect your phone line. Changing numbers is simple, if you ever need that.

5) you can also set-up really cheap 1-800 services and other stuff.

yeah i think i remember reading somewhere that servicemen stationed overseas would have relatives in the states (spouse most of the time) setup a VOIP account like vonage, and then mail the serviceman all the stuff.

then the guy or gal in uniform sets up the stuff on their computer overseas, and viola... unlimited local calls back home

i'm sure there was more to it than that... but i think that about covers the idea...

i have vonage now, and they have come a long way, made many improvements to their services, most likely due to many people getting settlements because of the 911 issue. Anyway, we had to use 911 a couple of times and all worked well. I don't think they will screw up again. LOL

You can also get these little Vonage USB Memory Stick size phones that you can carry with you and plug into any computer and you will have your phone. The software/etc is carried on the little stick, so all you need is the computer. It guess its like a mobile land line... Of course, your 911 won't be effective unless you update it for every location which takes 24 hours to update.

I give Vonage a big thumbs up! :yay:

Wish I did it earlier. I was paying $60/month to Verizon for the Freedom Package with unlimited long distance, etc. I've got all that from Vonage for $25/month. The quality is better than what I expected and I've only had one or two calls that had problems.

I'm running it over Comcast cable in a sparsely populated area, so I guess network congestion is reasonably low. When I'm downloading something big, I notice the voice quality getting a little 'fuzzy', but I don't care! Comcast goes out about twice a year based on my three year sample!

I don't get it - what's so cool about Vonage? Most people have cellphones, so why would you need Vonage? In fact, why would you even have a land line?

How does Vonage work?

Friends have it with their cable, internet, phone package and when the cable goes out, so does the phone and internet. :jameo: When I went cable internet, I tossed my land line and don't miss it a bit. I DO miss my number, 5 6 7 8 :bawl:

I don't think anyone knows how Vonage works. Maybe it's just magic.
