"(CNN)Walmart and Sears, two of the country's largest retailers, will remove all Confederate flag merchandise from their stores.

The announcements are the latest indication that the flag, a symbol of the slave-holding South, has become toxic in the aftermath of a shooting last week at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina. Gov. Nikki Haley announced in a Monday afternoon news conference that she supports removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol grounds.

As of Monday afternoon, Walmart.com carried the Confederate flag as well as attire featuring the flag's design, such as T-shirts and belt buckles.

"We never want to offend anyone with the products that we offer. We have taken steps to remove all items promoting the confederate flag from our assortment -- whether in our stores or on our web site," said Walmart spokesman Brian Nick. "We have a process in place to help lead us to the right decisions when it comes to the merchandise we sell. Still, at times, items make their way into our assortment improperly -- this is one of those instances." "

How do you feel about the Mexican flag, and the British flag, and the Spanish flag? How would you feel about the Russian flag flying over the capitol building in Juneau?

I really think its ridiculous for all this debate to be centered around this flag. The flag didn't cause the shooting in South Carolina, it was a person...a very deranged person, who pulled the trigger. Blaming the flag for that senseless violence is about as stupid as blaming a gun manufacturer for violent gun deaths. A person(s) will hate regardless of what laws the government makes or enforces. This has been proven over and over again. I have no dog in this hunt, so it doesn't really make a difference to me, but, just a hypothetical situation, suppose someone or some group says that the Maryland flag has caused them to feel discrimination or bias and they start a rally to have that flag taken from state buildings. What I'm saying is, this may set a precedent for all state and local flags now. Right or wrong, racial discrimination has existed for years, the flag has nothing to do with it. IMHO

True, but this was a civil war between the north and south. Divided yes, but still within these United States. Perhaps the confederate flag represents to some, the fallen soldiers in the civil war that were from the south. Wasn't there some congresswoman from Arizona a few years back, that flew a Mexican flag in a parade in Arizona? Why on earth would we allow a Mexican flag to be flown, but not a confederate flag?

When you lose the war your flag comes down. Period.

Comes down from display is one thing....eliminated from the public space altogether quite something else. That's Soviet-era stuff...make history change or disappear.

Exactly. But I'm not getting all bothered about removing CSA flags from poles on municipal buildings. Displayed by individuals who want to do that?..no problem at all.

The same argument holds true as the "there is nobody alive today that was a slave, that owned slaves" if white people want blacks to move on from slavery then they have to be willing to move on from the confederacy. How many people are even alive today that knew someone who fought in the civil war?
