Do they give meds? My old girl requires Rimadyl and Pronin. St. Marys animal hospital wants me to bring her in everytime (she is 16) to give her a physical, draw blood and weigh her, this is approx 75 -125.00 each visit. Since I am currently unemployed I cant afford the visit and the meds.

since she is that old.. she does need her blood work done before giving and non steroidal meds. As they can make the kidney/liver values elevate.

I was told that bloodwork once a year for a dog her age is sufficient. I dont mind paying the vet when its necessary, but were talking 4 times a year and since Iam not employed right at the moment, its a little difficult. I dont expect to get her meds for free but just thought the well pet clinic could dispense them at a cheaper rate. Thanks for the input.

My old guy is 16 also and he is on deramax (?), my vet writes the subscription for 6 months and then does a kidney panel when it is time for a renewal. (he only takes half of tablet though) Kinda sounds like 4 times a year is a little frequent. But then I do not know what Pronin is either so that may be why. Maybe you could switch Vets  ICIT could advise you better.

We were using Well Pet Clinic for dog and daughters cats, even though it is hard to get there with the hours they are open. Finally after standing outside reading the sign saying they were open and there was nobody there, we stopped going and went to All Kinds in Callaway. I agree, Well Pet had some good prices, but it just wasn't worth it for us, since they are rarely open. We are very happy with All Kinds and all our pets go there now.

Thanks for all the advice. I appreciate it. Pronin is a medication that controls her incontinence. She gets 1/2 a pill every morning and it works great. She was leaking urine when she would lay down. I was told this is normal for an older female who has been spayed and never had a litter. We had her spayed when six months old. Anyway, I may try the well pet clinic. Thanks again to all :)

Well Pet Clinic gets two thumbs up from me! The ladies there are very nice and I didn't pay an arm and a leg for vaccinations and flea/tick and heartworm meds. More than I paid in NC but everything up here is more expensive so I wasn't surprised. The vet did say that my dog is entering his "geriatric years" soon. :frown: I'll just refer to him as middle-aged.

That's the worst isn't it?

I recently got a reminder that Mily is due for her senior check-up. :bawl: Her black spot on the side of her face is starting to gray.....

They had a chart up in the exam room that says the life expectancy for large breed dogs is like 8-10 years, but giant breeds are 7-8 years. Generally catahoulas are 12-13 years but he is on the big side for his breed. I get weepy just thinking about it. :ohwell:

He'll be 6 next month. He's always been in perfect shape physically (but slightly Woody Allen-ish emotionally :lmao:) so I'm hoping we have at least 6 more years. Catahoulas are a hearty breed.
