What do people eat?

I was in Shoppers a while back and took my booty to the check out register and the Grocery transfer Technician (cashier) had no idea what an artichoke was. He held up the bag and said "What is this?". Same thing one day with an egg plant. Tonight at McKay's I had a parsnip, same deal.

So Boy has a pal staying over tonight and I made dinner and it included Brussels sprouts. He asked "What the heck are those?"

So all this came together in my head and now I wonder what people eat. Are vegetables at risk of becoming extinct from tables?

Why have you booty checked instead of your vegie's? That may be your problem.

Harvard beets :yay:

Now I was in Maine and one of the delicacies up there in the spring is a veggie called "fiddleheads". they are basically the tip of a fern that grows wild up there. So when I saw them on the menu I had to try them. They brought out my order with a nice steaming pile of fiddle heads on the side and I dug right in. It was quite vile and I didn't make it past 2 of them. But hey I tried.

DID YOU KNOW that whatever veggie you take to the checkout at Whole Foods, no matter how strange or obscure, the cashier knows exactly what it is? Sometimes I try to test them - I'll take up, say, Swiss chard. And the checker will say, "Ooh, yummy! You should wilt it with sauteed garlic and toss it with linguine, then give it a shave of pecorino."

It grows in the ground and whitish/purple in color?

I have one sitting on the counter waiting to be cooked. :yay:

That sounds more like a turnip........which I do not like. A parsnip looks like a squatty white carrot. They are almost radishy but if you saute them in butter the heat converts starches to sugars and they are sweet with a mild bite.
