Les Paul and wife Mary Ford explain Multi-track

So you thought Mike Oldfield and Enya were among the first to use the layering effect in their music. The host needs a teleprompter.

Something a little different

One of the many (many) genres I enjoy is that brand of western swing sometimes referred to as "cowboy music."

There's an old saw where someone says "We listen to two kinds of music here, mister: country, and western." Naturally, the clear implication is that rock ain't one of them two kinds of music.

Anyway, the movies had a lot to do with the rise of this brand or sub-genre of country music. It's what put the "western" in Country and Western. There were two basic styles of cowboy music: the ballads or the dance. No matter which, almost invariably, they were typified by the yodel. No telling how much influence the polka had on country. Here's a really great example of the latter.

Early Fleetwood Mac (with Peter Green) version of "Black Magic Woman."
This was before the chicks, although it was roughly around this same time period (as this performance) that Christine McVie (nee Perfect) started doing credited and uncredited piano work for the band. I think she also did some bass guitar for an earlier band, but I forget these things.

I haven't listened to much John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers in a while. This is a good one.

You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, so that when they turn their backs on you, you'll get the chance to put the knife in.
