what song are you listening to?

Is that even possible to answer? If it is Buchanan, I'd have never fell in love with the electric guitar and I consider Danny Gatton well beyond Roy in that style of Tele-pickin' clean playing.

Tommy Emmanuel (thanks Psy) is stunning, just a breath taking, natural player.

There are any number of amazingly proficient players who are boring as all hell.

Malmsteen. Batio.

There are others who are so silky smooth they truly make it look effortless and their taste is impeccable.

Chet Atkins

Al DiMeola

Lots of people, including great guitar players, think it's Clapton who I've never thought much of.

Should it be by genre? Era? Based solely on what great guitar players think? That would make the most sense.

Where to even start?

:buddies: It's all a matter of taste. I think we make it too complicated when it really just boils down to - what do you like?

I’ve made it no secret that Pat Metheny is my long-time mentor. Although he is a product of a long history of jazz influences, he is, in his own right, the most influential jazz musician alive today.

You're a fan of Pat Metheny? This changes everything! :buddies:

I play the guitar. I was turned on to Pat back in '78 and have followed him ever since. Before that I was into that speed guitar crap of Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, etc... Metheny really slowed me down and caused me to start listening to the music rather than finding the next fast riff. Even today I am still obsessed with his playing.

If you get TWU then you have special ears. With most folks that can't sit more than about 3.5 minutes listening to a song, this piece challenges every aspect of listening and attention span. It's laced with complex and layered time signatures and rhythms that most folks wont pick up. It's one thing to listen to it though; it's quite another to be able to play it. I've been obsessing over this tune for a few years now.
