San Diego is maybe not the first place most folks think of when they think of thriving music scenes, but for those of us who know and love America's finest city, the music scene is pretty awesome. The best part is the homegrown musicians (including transplants), and the promotion and support they receive from the locals, as well as radio stations, venues, and promoters. In fact, one of the local radio stations, KGB, published a series over about a 10 year period called "Homegrown." I never picked up any of the albums, to my regret, but I have heard a lot of them either on the radio or in different venues around town. No idea if they're still publishing the albums or not.

Anyway, that's a long-winded way of getting to this lady, whom I recently discovered on youtube. Check her out.

I know I've posted this before, but it's what I'm listening to right now. There was a logical progression this afternoon from Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac (before the chicks) to John Mayall to Big Mama Thornton. Legendary stuff, all of it.

I'm ashamed to admit that I never developed and appreciation for Taj Mahal when I was younger - he was pretty big in some of the circles I ran in. I'm trying to rectify that. "Stagger Lee" by Taj Mahal from 1969.

Night time is the right time to listen to Motown. Some epic music right here, starting with one of my all-time favorites, the Chi-lites. Put the candles on, get mellow, and check it out.

I love Motown too but your link doesn't seem to be working.

This is from the movie "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night," which is an interesting movie, to put it mildly. You probably won't appreciate it unless you're into foreign films and that whole film noir movement.

The song is "Death," by White Lies.

I don't listen to a ton of classical music, and when I do, I don't tend to stick with any one thing...I'm kind of all over the place. Fortunately, I was exposed to a wide variety of classical music when I was a kid. This is a movement from "The Planets," by Gustav Holst. I remember going to a concert where "the Planets" was featured. This one is "Jupiter," one of 7 movements to the work. The performers are the 5 Browns, which is a group of siblings; brothers and sisters.

Speaking of "The Planets," this is the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band with the first movement, "Mars, the bringer of War." It was always my favorite movement. I was about 11 when I heard this, and it left a big impression on me.

There have been a crap-load of adaptations and arrangements of movements from, and the entire suite for just about ever conceivable musical modality, including brass band, different numbers of pianos, concert bands, and so on. Just for giggles, here are a couple of rock arrangements. The first is "Mars, Bringer of War," by King Crimson, and the second is also "Mars," by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer.
