When Ordering a Burger...

in a restaurant (not fast food) is it unreasonable to expect to be told that the meat has been seasoned if it is not stated in the menu description?

I think it should be written in the menu description or definitely told to you upon order. My sister is on a very strict, strict diet and has had to send stuff back because stuff that should come out normal comes out smothered in seasonings, butters, and or sauces. If she orders plain steamed broccolli she doesn't expect it to come out gooped up. If she orders a burger sans bun, she doesn't expect it to come out buttered and seasoned.

I think it is reasonable to expect meat to be seasoned in some form unless otherwise stated. Most restaurants do not list the seasonings that will be on your steak, for example, or even if it will be seasoned at all, but it is assumed that the steak will at least have salt and pepper on it. I'd think that if you want the meat to be completely unseasoned, you would have to special request that (and then get lucky).

I would expect some seasoning, but nothing more than a subtle flavor enhancer. If it's a spicy or strong flavoring I would expect it to say so on the menu.

I'll agree with this... "blackened", "cajun", or any specific sauces should be noted and usually are... now I feel the need to state that I am assuming Malice is referring to a heavily seasoned burger and not the typical sal/pepper seasoning. I can't see anyone complaining about light seasoning.

I would expect that the meat would be seasoned. I am not sure too many places default to unseasoned meat. I would think that if a diner requires no seasoning for whatever reason that would be a special request

Simply ask how it's prepared. Most places will tell you if it's not on the menu.

I know, for a fact, that she likes her meat without ANY seasoning.

Happy Camping!

Here's where we differ because I can (and do) see people complaining about all sorts of ridiculous things.

Gotcha... well, in the case of my sister, she lets the server know right up front she can't do sauces, seasonings or butters and 99% of the time this makes for a happy meal. In fact, that is how we found out that Longhorn smothers their steaks in seasoned butter. Once the server understood her contraints he quickly pointed out that they do that and said he would make sure the kitchen knew not to butter season her steak which is something the usually do to EVERY steak even though it isn't noted on the menu.

That's just weird.

But she doesn't ruin it by ordering it well done, right? That's the ultimate way to ruin good meat.

The hamburgers were delicious and tasted like a hamburger should. Each person added their own items to taste.
