I loathe WIC's but I think the Food Stamp debit system is totally screwed. I see people buying top dolla' steak, shrimp, and the like and drive away in the latest Mustang Cobra. Eh?

I don't even work in a grocery store and that crap pisses me off:jet:

I think 8 million people being on WIC is ridiculous too. Yes there are people who deserve it but there are FAR more people just milking it because they are lazy piece of shiats.

how anal this 'system' is with it's checks?

Most stores have a variations of buttons to push when processing a WIC. If you mess 'any' of these up, which the process (when memorized seems routine, however to the newcomer employee seems like a world champion chess match with cash register buttons) has to pay for the entire check.

Luckily I've only had to pay for one of these being less than $5. I've seen folks have to pay up to $80 though.

I didn't say it was a bad program, but 8 million freakin' people? I'm sorry, I just can't feel all warm and fuzzy about that.

I don't feel warm and fuzzy either

Well, I'm not going to rephrase it so the defensive can understand it.

WIC Program Update- 08-07-2006 01:47 PM yeah, better to remain looking like a fool than to correct yourself and admit you were wrong!

It's not my fault that you're incapable of following the conversation. If everyone agreed with you, I'd certainly consider that I'm wrong. However, quite a few people understood exactly what I was saying. So...GFY.

I understand that way too many military families live near the poverty level. I would like to see the enlisted pay grades raised by 50%. The E-1 through E-5 are the backbone of our services, and shouldn't have to worry about the electric or phone services being cut off at home while they are deployed.
BULL####!!

Enlisted people are NOT any closer to the poverty level than most people their age..

IF you figure just their basic pay then yes, but after you figure in the cost of Free Health Care, Free Housing, Free Electricity... extra money a month for food.. how much is tax free.. etc etc...

For people that are so impoverished they sure do drive NICE cars and have a lot of toys in their yards in the housing areas..

I raised four kids on enlisted pay.. starting as an E-3. I never needed a gov't handout, never used food stamps or welfare.. and I made a HELL of a lot less then they make now.

But you also mentioned free healthcare, free housing, free electricity, free money for food, and I'm sure the list goes on. I could raise 4 kids if I didn't have to pay for anything other than a car, too.

That was my point..

They claim poverty when in fact when you take into consideration the cost of their benefits. they really aren't.

And then when you add in the tax benefit.. for example.. Price of rent for you and me is say $1400 for a three bedroom townhouse, well they get it for free, so you would assume the value added to their base pay to be $1400. But for someone to get the $1400 to pay the rent, they actually have to gross closer to $1900 or even $2,000, then you could do the same for Electric and gas.. if the cost for you and me is X, if they get it for free, the true value of that benefit would be 120%(X).

Not everyone enlisted lives in military housing. I know I didn't due to the fact there was a waiting list a mile long just to get into it. My entire rent was not paid for either. We did without a lot due to what we had to pay out of pocket. Before the electricity was deregulated, things were not bad at all. But once that happened, I got an electic bill for a two bedroom flat (maybe 900 sq ft) for $250 when normally it ran about $60 a month if not less. Plus I had to pay for daycare because I just couldn't leave the baby at home by herself at 6 weeks old while I went to work. I did get WIC when I was pregnant and for 9 months after the baby was born.

Thanks for addressing that - and let me add:

You don't get free clothing and food, either. You do get to shop at the commissary, but that's not free, and stuff in the PX is all brand-name and costs more than what you get at the Target.

You get medical, sure, but it's comparable to what you'd get with any decent company. And it's not even close to what you get as civil service, or at least it wasn't at any of my ex's duty stations.

My ex got out as an E-5 and we damn sure didn't drive a fancy car or eat filet mignon every night. Maybe the guys who were single and lived in the barracks were, but we weren't.

Now I shall wait to hear someone pipe up with, "Well, if you can't afford to get married and have children, you shouldn't do it." I'm ready for them.
