I'd actually like this answer... My friend is Mormon and I really don't understand it.
There's really not much to understand.. they hold their membership to high standards.. No alcohol, no tobacco products, no coffee or tea..

They believe in Christ, they believe in the god head (the father, the son, and the holy spirit)..

The book of mormon tells the story of another family, another lineage.. it doesn't supercede the bible, it's an additional story to the bible. It tells the story of the Lost Tribe of Israel that settled on this part of the world.

Mormonism, like all Christian religion follows the lineage of Adam, and the priests within the church can follow their authority to hold the priesthood back to Adam..

There is no local "leadership" the church is member run.. there is nobody on the local or regional level on the church payroll.. it's all done by volunteerism.. (it's against the mormon religion to practice priestcraft, or use the powers and authority granted to them to make money).. The membership give the sermons, and talk about their experiences, there is no one priest that talks every week, and tells you that you are a sinner and going to rot in hell .. The membership delivers and bless the sacrement at church.. Usually the young men, and after church go to homes, hospitals and nursinghomes to deliver, and bless the sacrement for members that couldn't make it to church..

Don't forget the D&C or Pearl of Great Price. The B of M may not supersede the bible, but those two?

No they do not supercede either. The church still revolves around the New Testement like any other Christian chuch. The Pearl of Great Price is antother book of Moses and if I remember correctly, a book of Abraham, and the Donctrine and Covenants is modern day prophecy to amplify the teachings of Christ. The D&C is where the church officially abolished polygomy.

In short, the main thing is that Orthodox Christianity holds that the Trinity is representative of God being three and yet one. Many people (me) have difficulty understanding how this is possible and the Bible speaks implicitly on this not explicitly.

In Mormonism it is held (not necessarily by all those that call themselves Mormon but rather by their official doctrine) that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are three separate Gods. This doctrine also holds that the Gods used to be men, that they were created beings who became Gods and furthermore that your goal is to become a god and populate you own creation. A neat idea but one that separates Mormonism from mainstream Christianity. Both are religions with a central core of beliefs that anyone can find out about by doing a little research, but they are not that "same religion".

P.S.

brendar buhl,

Kindly click on and read the link I posted in post 62. It really might help you to understand the wiccan religion a little clearer.

Thanks, I did read your friends web page in it's entirety a couple of days ago but then I forgot to comment on it. She did a good job, it's very informative. I still don't understand something though. Isn't it true that many Wiccans don't believe in divinity at all? Those who do believe in divinity are supposed to select who their God and Goddess are going to be. Can I choose Jesus and still be Wiccan? If not, why?

I think I'm gonna start a new religion. Who wants to join? We'll meet at a local bar and make up the rules as we go along. Services will be held on Friday and Saturday nights. What should we worship. No witches, that's already taken. Any other ideas?

WRONG!!

The Father is God.. the Son is Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is one of the spirits who has never been to earth to gain an earthly body.. One of the three has been a man, has had an earthly body..

Try again..your research is flawed.

Okay, sorry. My Mormon neighbor misinformed me, or maybe I just heard him wrong. What you are saying is that the Mormon Church denies the divinity of Jesus Christ. The Christian Church believes that Jesus is God and that the Holy Spirit is God and that the Father is God. That is the mystery of the Trinity. This is one of the fundamental tenets of Christianity. I'm sorry if I misrepresented the beliefs of the Mormon Church but it was second hand info and we had a couple of beers so...you know. The point is that Christianity holds that Jesus Christ is God, Mormonism does not, that makes them two different religions.

Of course my original point was that a "religion" where anything you want is God or nothing at all is God...well that's not a religion.

There's a two hour documentary on PBS tonight and tomorrow about Mormonism. It might help you understand their views.

I don't know the answer to this, so I am asking those who know...

I understand that when one enlists, there is a box to check that asks religion. And everyone checks it in the most non-troublesome manner. (Heyyy, I'm a Christian!) Because, lets face it, if you check the 'muslim' or 'wiccan' box you and yours are going to be swarmed by NCIS and the like. Your path to any sort of a clearance will be hampered.

But when it gets right down to it, you just might die while in duty to your country. Happens all the time. Is there any box to check for what should be on your gravestone?

That's a serious question. I know folks out there know the answer.

Personally, all I would need is name, DOB, DOD, and USA. But that's just me. (Make my grave marker and coffin wood, so they are biodegradable. Just like me.)

You are REQUESTED to provide a religious preference for only one reason. That is so if you're on your death bed and can't act/talk for yourself, they can call a clergy in for you. They would do that based on your record...call a priest if you're Catholic, etc, etc. There is NO question contained with a security clearance document that asks about religious background or preference. For security clearance purposes they care more about your financial stability than they do your religion.

 Off-topic - I picture your goddess as a dried-up barfly, 35 years old but looking 55, with a voice like Ernest Borgnine and a cough that won't go away.
