Hello,

I moved to Abberly Crest 1 month ago. I am very pleased with the apartment, we moved into the newest phase so everything was brand new! The ceilings are high and I personally think we have plenty of space! There are two of us in the two bedroom, 2 bathroom unit. There is a seperate small laundry space, great storage and amazing walk in closets! I feel your pain, having just gone through it! The rent seems expensive here at first glance but it also includes internet and expanded basic cable. This combined with the cost of rent I was coming from in Boston makes it seem like a screaming deal! Good look with your hunting!
not to mention security in the public access spots. Card access, etc. The one thing that would be great is to make the premises a gated community!

I have heard bad things about all of the apartments listed as well. I can't say that my stay at Hickory Hills has been terrible but I never felt like I was getting my moneys worth... A 1 bedroom apartment in St. Mary's county is just not worth $900/month in my opinion.

I wish Hickory Hills would get rid of the ridiculous gate, widen the parking spots and enforce parking... Those were my 3 biggest issues other than price... I imagine the other places have similar issues...

I can say that Hickory Hills is probably the most pet friendly community around though and that is a big deal to a lot of people...

I am leaning towards hickory because they are pet friendly. I have a German shep/ Collie mix and some of the other places will not allow it. She is more friendlier than most breeds, doesn't hardly bark or anything. It's their property so what can you do...

When I moved down here I looked at Wildewood and Abberly Crest, and chose to move into Abberly. The rent is high, but it's nice. The office staff is friendly, and I've had fast responses by the maintenance team. The complex is quiet, and I think it's in a good location (I work down at Webster Field and the commute is a breeze). If you want more opinions, you can look at a post I made back in August asking the same question. Here's the link if you want (http://forums.somd.com/life-souther...on-park-california-apartment-suggestions.html). Good Luck!

Thanks that helped as well. How is that Masters in EE going? I eventually want to get a Masters in Mechanical Eng or Eng Mgmt.

Does the listed price on the website include the cable/internet? I thought it wasn't. Either way, it's more or less a 50% discount from what you would be getting with Metrocast, so that's always a nice deal.

Space Chick, I have lived in Spyglass for over three years. It is an older place, but still in great condition. They are pet friendly, has a great beach, tennis court, and pool. The big plus for me, was it was just out of main town far enough, and very very quiet! Just for your info from another that lives in Spyglass.

Sockgirl, I don't know how you can figure a house is cheaper to buy. If you can afford a house for 200,000 (if you can find one for that is a good neighborhood) you monthly for just the house is over $1100, then you have to factor in insurance and taxes! That is more than my $1000 apartment. Plus I don't have to replace any appliances, or pay to get an A/C unit or heater fixed. Granted I won't have anything to show for my money when I am ready to move.

I live about a mile or so from Abberly Crest, it seems to be a really nice neighborhood. My nephew lived there for a year or so before he brought a house and he really liked it.

Don't forget utilities are probably much higher. I've heard people in relatively small places with insane electric bills compared to my gas/electric combo. There isn't a house I'd want to live in with a lower payment overall than what I have. But some people are ok with lower end stuff as long as they have a little more room. I have no complaints about the amount of room, I don't need much as long as I have storage space

I'm sure some areas are fine but i really dont want to live somewhere that "some" of the areas are ok. I want to feel safe all of the time.

"some" of waldorf is ok but I would not live there either.

because geography and the post office don't always agree there are sections that are served by the Lexington Park post office that are phyiscally located in other areas - such as California. Esperanza and Town Creek areas are north of the CALIFORNIA sign (and post office) put have a LP address.

But the label hurts your resale value regardless.

I haven't started my master's yet, trying to find the motivation to go back to school lol. My plan is to go back in the fall and get my master's through John Hopkins at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center. Sounds like you're an Engineer too, are you moving down here to work at PAX?

That is great as long as the person can afford the house payment throughout the year. Saving six grand doesn't lower the amount you pay per month.

You do realize that you can adjust how much is taken out of your paycheck dont you?

I'm single, claim 6 fed and 6 state and still get a small refund.

Yes, the Price does include internet and expanded basic cable, it is a great deal! It is VERY quiet the only thing I ever hear is during the day (man I need a job) is some of the air station planes flying over.

Also, I know pet's are allowed here but there is some pet rent or something and you can only have dogs on the 1st and 2nd floor. They just opened up another new phase so I am sure they have 1st floor apts available. And construction on the 2nd gym seems to be coming along and they say will be ready in the next month or so...

Good Luck!

I didn't read through this whole thing but I lived in spyglass for 3 years....its was nice and quiet except during party time at my place and there is a private beach you can have bonfires at...I had a military discount when I lived there so for a 2 bedroom 1 1/2 bath I paid $780 the first year $850 the second and $950 the last year I was there because I lived there so long and I got out of the navy they were going to hike up the rent to around $1400 so I just bought a house

Don't Do It!

If you want to be frustrated with lack of response and lack of competence, get an apartment at Wilderidge or Wildewood. After you get past the sales pitch and sign, it all goes downhill and keeps getting worse.
I also have heard good things about Abberly Crest.

Housing here is waay overpriced! There is no mall here, no decent movie theatre with seats that you want to even sit in because they are so uncomfortable, boring, nothing to do, etc. etc. They keep transferring jobs here, but the redneck legislators limit growth to a max of 2% every year, so development cannot keep up with demand. I did a comparison and the real estate prices here rival those of new york city and miami, and areas in California. This place sucks. I am trying to move out of here asap. If you are not military or do not work for a government contractor your future is not too bright here.

Abberly has gone down hill just in the year we've been here. We chose this complex over the others because they offer the 3 bedroomk 2 baths and the office staff was very friendly. Now they are so big that they cannot keep up with what is going on and a lot of times you may not get the correct answer to things. I think if they wer to hire a few more people it would improve. I even think they should have another office in phase II with maybe 2 people working just to keep up with things and be able to maintain a relationship with tenants. Just my opinion.

Maintenance is still good and their response time is still good. We are glad construction is ending, that was a lot of our frustration. The traffic was horrible and the trucks blowing their horns and running outside the windows would wake my baby up. Any parent dealing w/a cranky baby would be frustrated with this. They always used the main entrance never the other entrance.

Abberly is very over priced but it is safe and for the most part clean. As long as the people with dogs clean up the crap. That is nasty and gross and I shouldn't have to clean it up since I don't have dogs. Yes, cable and internet is provided which is a plus. We also like the storage room and the size of the bedrooms and bathrooms. We also like the pool and the playground. Honestly, that is all I can say. We are so ready to move. We have kids and they have a bedtime of 9PM. We keep them as quiet as possible and the people without kids always manage to complain about how loud they are. They go to school during the day and we go out of town a lot on weekends. If you are renting any where that is populated with kids then don't complain if you hear them running or walking. Kids are kids. Also the paint sucks be prepared to touch it up a lot.

We are moving because we are buying a house. I will tell you the mortgage may be about $200 lower but after adding taxes and insurance it is more then what we are paying for rent. We were not in a position to buy last year.
