Wolf As Pet

A freind told me that someone around the area actually has a full bred "domesticated" wolf as a pet. Would anyone happen to know who this is? Wolves are my favorite animal and I would love to see it if at all possible.

I believe that owning one is illegal, I also believe that a dog that is just 1/2 wolf is also but not positive....

Go up to Yellowstone and see some real wolves.

Someone off McIntosh in Hollywood used to have them. I went and saw them years ago. She had permits and special permission and all that jazz I recall.

About 8 years ago I used to know a woman who owned what she claimed to be a wolf. She would bring him out in Waldorf; she said he was as gentle as a regular dog. I don't know if she was fully truthful on the animal's origins or not, but he did appear to have some wolf traits. She did not make it known to many people because she did not want to have to go through red tape to be able to keep him legally. I only saw them a few times and never did learn many details about her.

i knew someone who had wolf hybrids. Since they were owned prior to outlawing them in Maryland their legality was grandfathered in.

If you're interested in a dog that looks lupine then research the Tamaskan which have only recently been introduced to the US.

My mom's friend had a hybrid. She got really upset and surprised when it grabbed her 2 yr old son by his throat. Wolves are pretty, but they shouldn't be pets.

I have what I believe to be a hybrid-she showed up at my door 2 yrs ago. I took her to my vet who indicates she "appears" to be a hybrid-at this time, no definitive test exists to prove if an animal is "part wolf". The dog is unique, not like any other I've ever had. She may not be 50% hybrid but she has wolf in her-of that I'm certain.

I was interested in the Tamaskan several months ago. Even had the breeder picked out and everything. But the $2000 price tag stopped me in my tracks. Plus I talked to some people over-seas where the Tamaskan is from and they say that all it is a Malamute mix and they just gave it a "new" name.

They are still beautiful dogs though and would love to have one if they didn't cost so much. :ohwell:

Yeah, I think you and I discussed it here. There's a breeder in North Carolina, correct? All breeds are a mix of something or another (for example, Dobermans are a mix of greyhound). Supposedly the Tamaskan lines have excellent documentation and the wolf instinctual traits have supposedly been bred out keeping the physical traits. I'm sure it's look, the documentation, as well as the fact that it's a new breed in the US is what "justifies" the hefty price tag. I'd love to have one too but it's too rich for me.
