Yet another single vehicle accident in to a tree or in this case a "pole

I've noticed that many times. One lonely pole, tree or fence post, nothing for hundreds of feet either side of it, but for some reason it gets hit.

Might have something to do with visual. When riding a motorcycle, you're always taught to look to where you want to go, not at the potential hit point. Driving a car, you go off the road and the only thing you see is a tree, so you hit it because you're focused on it.

Yep, target fixation. They teach racecar drivers the same thing "Look where you want to go, no matter what's happening". If you break that and look where you will crash, its easy to fixate on the worst thing you see and its becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

That would explain accidents when she's doing reverse cowgirl.

When I first moved to somd in 1998, I was stunned to see how many motor vehicles accidents they had in this area. There was the high school kid that pulled out in front of a dump truck on 235 in Mechanicsville. They had the white crosses there for a long time. I guess on the country roads the lack of a shoulder doesn't give you a lot of room if you overcorrect while driving too fast.

And how many wrecks happen on the bridge? Not before the bridge or after the bridge, right on the bridge. It's like people forget how to drive once their car is suspended above water. Same with the Woodrow Wilson bridge. People will drive from Maine to Florida. But if they are going to breakdown it will be on the WW bridge during rush hour.

I'm surprised no one mentioned wildlife, until now at least.

The other thing is the utility companies in So MD use "Mobility" poles. Developed with funding from the collision repair industry they are designed to climb out of their holes when no one is looking and squat in the middle of the road. When a vehicle swerves around them, they spring back to their hole and Blammo!

We just got a new load today and them things are jumping all over the pole yard!

I firmly believe accidents such as described in this thread are 90% caused by texting
Yeah, everyone knows it at this point. Including law enforcement. But, for some reaason those that can do something about it choose not to. At least so far. It will change eventually. But, with time. I have confidence it will change. Perhaps misplaced confidence I admit. But, I am trying to stay positive that someting for the better will improve.

I've started wearing "shooting" glasses when driving at night. They're great for cutting the blue-white light given off by LED headlights, but it sounds like you needed welding goggles.
Funny you mention that, I have been doing it for quite some time. The shooting glasses are great for that. Have you ever looked at the Maryland Motor Vehicle law (on line) to see what the brightest headlights on cars are allowed to be? You would be surprised.

I thought I was going to lose control one night heading south on 249. Coming up the hill to Bob's Beer Cave, there's a Sheriff's car just past the crest with a car pulled over. He had on what I call "midnight sun" lights facing behind the patrol car. They were so bright I was blinded and drifted part way into the oncoming lane.
That happened one time on top of the bridge too. The red/blue lights on the Sheriff's car were blinding traffic.

I ordered aftermarket LED headlights for my "new" vehicle so I can at least see the deer I'm about to hit.

I try not to drive at night anymore but special glasses can help.
They do and they're not that expensive. Si Robertson has started wearing Battle Vision glasses since his recent eye surgery. He no longer needed his Coke bottle bottom glasses, but felt naked without them. Mine are actually from an automobile cooling system leak detection kit from Auto Zone.

Aiming may also be part of the problem. People adjusting headlights to see farther down the road.

In my Jetta, even a std F150 can blind me without realizing it. Then you get the dumb****s with a lift kit and tires that stick out a foot past the fenders. They never think to have the headlights readjusted. It's one of those things you live with. Luckily I have remote mirrors and turn them outwards. Can't do anything about them flooding the cabin of the car except focus straight ahead.

And sometimes you just can't do anything about it. Coming home with the truck pulling a trailer, so down in the tail a little bit. Pull up to a stop light, Mazda Miata in front of me, his top down. Guy starts waving frantically at me because I'm blinding him. He thinks my high beams are on. so I flipped up from low to high and REALLY blinded him. Then he realized I WAS on low beam and kinda accepted it. I played the nice guy and turned my headlights off until we started moving again.

On Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at approximately 8:00 p.m., police, fire and rescue personnel responded to Three Notch Road and St. Andrew’s Church Road in California, for the motor vehicle collision reported serious with one trapped.

Crews arrived on the scene to find a single Ford pickup truck off the roadway and into a utility pole with the single occupant pinned and trapped.

Firefighters from Bay District and Hollywood began extrication and requested a helicopter a short time after their arrival.

Due to the victims deteriorating condition, firefighters performed rapid extrication to remove the victim from the vehicle in under 13 minutes.

Maryland State Police Helicopter Trooper 7 was placed on standby. The victim was transported to the St. Mary’s County Airport where Trooper 7 transported the victim to an area trauma center with serious injuries.

Police are investigating the single vehicle collision. Medical personnel advised the Trooper flight medics the victim was an adult male who was conscious, combative, and impaired.

As of 9:00 p.m., lanes are still closed for police investigation. Use caution in the area and watch for First Responders.

I have an ongoing joke that St. Mary's County has trees with magnetic properties because of all of the cars and trucks being attracted to them and going off of the road. In this case it is a pole. Putting kidding a side, this is a serious epidemic in St. Mary's County if not all of Souithern Maryland. Perhaps our Law Enforcement folks are doing something about it. If so, the problem continues and any enforcement effort of distracted driving is ignored. The fines and points need to be doubled. Maybe that will get attention of the drivers. In one month period, I had THREE cars come head on in my lane of traffic toward me. If it wasn't for evasive action, I would be a dead. The bottom line, people think it is the other guy that can't go 50 or even 70 down the road and not crash while on their cell phone.. What people don't understand is the "other guy" is anyone and everyone.
I'm more of a "vehicle into the building" watch and see type of person. Never ceases to amaze me how this happens. Not to mention, the latest incident was at my place of employment.

I don't feel like we had as many as we do nowadays. Nowadays, you see them happening for no reason, usually during daylight hours...Just my view, you may not agree.
Adjusted for population I'll bet there were just as many. The reason you didn't hear about them as often, or did after the fact, is likely because there weren't outlets that provided news/information almost in real time. not to mention social media. Look how often you see a thread here with a variation of "Accident on TJ Bridge".
