It's not that they can't find teachers, it's that they can't find black teachers.
Please show me some kind of reference where this is stated.
Until then - you're just speaking out of your buttocks...

...WE as people need to change these appropriation laws and get the children new schools and NOT Wildewood Condos! New roads anyone?
Did we forget this country is ran by the people, for the people?

Filling teaching positions seems like a bad idea to me. I'm also sick of the b*tching in general about how underpaid teachers are. $42K for a start is not underpaid. And public school teaching is an EASY job.

Charles County is in a shortage of teachers, in general, and $42k is great pay for a anyone ripe out of college.
Saying it's an easy job may upset some of the teachers on this board.
I don't think down here starting out they get 42k, I could be wrong.
Teaching isn't rocket science - agreed - but I know it's an awful lot of work.
I don't know about you guys, but I'd love to know that our children are getting all the attention they can get.
I would like to know that the teachers are taking the time to make sure the students are learning and not just grading the students work just to get the job done...
‘‘We are a school system interested in adding diversity and being culturally proficient,” so that teachers reflect the diversity of the student population, said Deborah Dennie, recruitment specialist for St. Mary’s public schools.
In the 2006-2007 school year, 25.6 percent of students were minorities compared with only about 6.4 percent of teachers. Those numbers haven’t changed much since.
This certainly sounds to me that they are not interested in white teachers. They want diversity. If you are going to Jamaica I have to assume that you are not looking at white teachers there. I don't know the exact percentage but I would have to guess 95% of Jamaicans are black.
Once again it doesn't matter how qualified someone is but on the color of their skin. And I have to also agree with the person who said $42,000 was a decent salary to start. Sheriff officers, I believe, don't even start at that.
Reading the "headline" it is clear what is being soughtPlease read the article and try to understand what it is saying.
It seems to me it's trying to find qualified teachers outside of the area because none are flocking to st mary's county to teach.
I don't know about you, but:
_hard to fill positions_
and
_areas hardest to fill_
seems to convey that people around here don't want the job.
Basically they are trying to think outside the box and attract people here - WHOEVER they can find.
Don't you think if we didn't have a shortage here - then these positions wouldn't be hard to fill?
Qualified minority applicants for math, science sought

St. Mary’s turns to Jamaica to help recruit new teachers
In an effort to find teachers for hard-to-fill positions, St. Mary’s public school system is extending its search outside of the country’s borders.
Werd. I had to drop a college math course once because I couldn't understand the teacher's thickly accented Engrish. And what about the children being able to understand teachers with heavy accents?

And what else does the article say?Yep it sure does...
Followed by the first sentence:
It says qualified.
It doesn't say:
"St Mary's County looking to add minorities to bolster it's minority teacher population."
It seems to me they are looking for QUALIFIED teachers...
Not unqualifed let's take the jobs away from the caucasian teachers around here because we are racist and want to stick it to the local teachers...
Drawing from the pool of Jamaican teachers certified as highly qualified aligns with a goal of St. Mary’s schools – increase minority recruitment.

And what else does the article say?
Does this mean that qualified white teachers who do apply will be rejected by the counties Affirmative Action plan...
