This is my home - has been for 44 years. It IS special to me, and it holds a special place in my heart. My family is here; my friends are here. I've had many memorable experiences here, and a very few not so memorable ones. SoMD had many things to offer, but only to those people who actually get out of their house and explore the area and the many activities that we have.

I wasn't born here, but I now call it home. I think most everyone on the forums knows that for many years I wanted to go back to FL. Now if I had to leave, I think I'd be crushed. Southern Maryland has become home.

I suppose if I stayed here for another 5 years, I would have a different opinion. But going from a place that has so much, to one that has to little it kind of a culture shock. I have been here a little over 2 years now. Geographically its not that I don't like this place, but its the conveinence factor. there isn't one. I hate long stretches of driving to go somewhere that has what I need, that is all. I think the area is pretty, crime rate is considerably lower than in cities (at least in certain areas) I am not used to things shutting down around 8 or 9 at night....and the slower paced way of life. I am sure it has been good for me, but I don't realize it right now. I guess I am too young and juvenile still. I don't think it really matters where you are. Its the people that you are with that makes all the difference. That is what Southern Maryland has truly taught me. :yay:

I want my child to be raised in a normal environment.
Will you be putting her up for adoption? Or does this mean you'll be giving custody to your soon to be ex-husband?

Not sure what this guy is talking about MD gives you the first 5k tax free.

Military Retirement Income
Senate Bill 22 link to (Chapter 226, Acts of 2006) - Income Tax - Subtraction Modification - Military Retirement Income

This Act amends TG §10-207(q) to provide a subtraction modification in the amount of the first $5,000 of military retirement income received by an individual during the taxable year. "Military retirement income" is defined to mean retirement income received as a result of military service. "Military service" is defined to mean:

Induction into the armed forces of the United States for training and service under the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 or a subsequent Act of similar nature;
Membership in a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States;
Membership in an active component of the armed forces of the United States;
Membership in the Maryland National Guard; or
With respect to a person separated from employment on or after July 1, 1991, active duty with the commissioned corps of the Public Health Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or the Coast and Geodetic Survey.
This Act eliminates the former requirement that the individual had to be at least 55 years old and an enlisted member of the military at the time of retirement in order to qualify for the subtraction modification. It also eliminates any reduction of the subtraction based on the amount of federal adjusted gross income.

There is rumor that this number is going to increase to 10 over the next few years.

Please remove your head from your a$$, I moved here for my retirement from the US Navy after 24 years and absolutely LOVE IT!!! I've lived in Va. Beach and pretty much everywhere else in the world. This is an awesome place to retire at for family, homes, fishing, crabbing, golfing, hunting, and you are closer to some of the best cultural centers in the US. Regardless of what this person says, I disagree!!! :coffee:

Boy. I sure opened a can of worms on this thread! Everyone has opinions...most with examples but some with midless dribble.

i'm new(6 months) to st. mary's and i enjoy it although i'm still learning it as well. i like the slower pace, the customer service, friendly people, parks, being surrounded by water, etc. each weekend, the family just get in the car and go; we find a different area of st. mary's that we haven't ventured to and go from sun up to sun down. and now that the weather is changing we will be able to explore more.

i lost yard space but i looked at what i gained and besides i really don't hang out in my yard, so it's fine. my kids are still adjusting but that was to be expected pulling them from their comfort zone which was built during the last 6 years.

speaking on traffic--if you commute during rush hour/peak time, some traffic and delays should be expected. i commute to d.c. everyday (i tried the various ways but by far suggest rt. 4) but i leave between 5:30-6am and i have no complaints
