Music works for me...
I don't get on here much, but I agree with using music. I have Disney's Lullaby Album and my girls listen to it every night when they are going to sleep. I read a story (in your case if he doesn't want it may want to skip that part) then I give them a hug/kiss, tuck them in and turn on their music (it is also available on iTunes). After about song 2, they are fast asleep...literally 10 minutes or less after the book.
I do stay with them until they are sleeping...and if they don't stay laying down with their eyes closed quietly, I will get up and leave. They learned that I meant it as I have actually had to follow through on it a few times. But now they go right to sleep. It used to take 45 minutes to an hour of them screaming after the book that they were afraid of the dark, not tired, or wanted to sleep in the bed with mommy...
Also, radio or even a cd player with a lullaby CD in it playing very quietly. That was also very soothing for Thing1.
Good grief, he loves his music by his bedside to this day. But it's definitely not quiet, or lullabies anymore!
