BULLSHIT! :duh: I am speaking from experience so don't argue with me young grasshopper.

We lost EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING we owned in 1985 when we were hit by a flood that wiped out 1/3 of our town. We had NO warning, no weatherbug or newscasts saying, it's gonna flood and it's gonna be a big one. We DID have common sense to look at the water steadily rising and figured, "damn, it's probably not a good idea to sit my ass on the porch and watch the water run through my yard, it might just be a good idea to head to higher ground". The flood that hit our town came QUICK and without warning and we all managed to survive and not have to climb up on our roof. It's common effin sense for cryin out loud.

What does my experience have to do with what has happened in NO or Mississippi. Don't turn this into a battle of minute points.
You said "easier said than done my friend, easier said than done".

It speaks of experience. Have you any? Or were you just 'conjecturing'?

I've never climbed the Hymalayas but I hear it's pretty tough. Are you saying it's easy to tread these waters? If so, tell me how one could tread these poisonous waters for miles and miles just hoping to find something in time before your wife and children lose all strength and ability to tread.

Or we could take your route of conjecturing...

You say I know nothing of treading water, I say you know nothing of treading that water in particular. Where are we now in the debate besides a minute point?

And I agreed with that. You were not on a roof top though. These people ARE stupid but they still have pain just like the rest of us.

Okay, now you're being the drama mama. You are missing the point BL, they should not be in the position to have to tread water to escape. What dumb ass sticks around for a CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE? Doing so with children should be grounds for arrest and prosecution for child abuse, or at a minimum child negligence.

I'm not sure what I'd do, honestly. When I was a teenager, my friend and I were out on a raft and it capsized and floated away. So there we were, in the middle of a HUGE lake with only two plastic oars for floatation. So we swam....and we swam...and we swam...and finally I was so exhausted I said, "Meg - forget it! We're never going to make it. Let's just fall asleep and drown."

Well, she mustered the energy to start beating me over the head with her oar, cussing me out. This motivated me to paddle hard to get away from her. And we both got a burst of energy and made it to shore.

But, man, it sure was tempting just to go to sleep.

Well, considering we are the richest nation on Earth, we seem to have enough resources and manpower to handle this devastation ourselves. Asking Indonesia to help us would be like me going up to a homeless man on the street and asking for a few dollars for some food. Kind of an absurd thought, don't you think? Besides, while hurricane Katrina has truly been a terrible disaster for the people in the affected areas, it pales in comparison to the 200,000+ people that died in Indonesia last year.

Plus another major difference. Those people who are displaced in the U.S. by Katrina in a few days will likely have shleter, food, clean water to drink and bathe. Yes it sucks that a lot of them will be homeless in the near future but they are alive and will continue to live.

With the tsunami you had the potential of a much greater death toll after the waves because a lot people did not have access to clean water, shelter, food and the chance of deadly diseases spreading was much greater. The tsunami nations had large amounts of their populations that were isolated and had difficulty getting aid.

Should I find myself in a sudden flood, hunkered on a rooftop, I think I would not wait for help to come, but rather move from rooftop to rooftop, floating or swimming, whatever, until I found a place where more people were. If they were stupid, I would continue on to the next rooftop, and the next. Were I thirsty, I would suck it up, and seek survival. Eventually, I would hit hard ground, or yet another rooftop, tired and hopeless.

THEN, I would look for help.

I gotcha C and I have yet to miss that point. Again I say these people are stupid for not leaving. This still does not excuse the fact that they are still human beings in need.

:huggy: That is so awesome.

I'm not really going, but I WANT to go. I feel the need to do SOMETHING..ANYTHING. I don't know what they were thinking, what they were feeling...why they didn't leave their homes. That doesn't matter to me, they need help. There are children that need help. It's heartbreaking to watch.

Sorry guys. Buddy, we leave at 4:30 a.m. tomorrow. I have the need to help these people.
 I'm all for helping those who have to come back eventually to deal with the destruction of their homes, but sorry, have no sympathy for the retards on their roofs. IF these folks would have heeded the warnings and left, there would be many more resources available to assist and rescue those who truly couldn't leave.

Should it take days to float/swim, I would find fresh water sources in the most unlikeous of places, like rain gutters, or floating containers. Or unopened soda cans; whatever I could find. Always moving away from the high water, until I found people in exodus.

Once there....I WOULD NOT SHOOT THEM FOR MEDICINE OR A TV!!!!
