Aministrative User Profile won't load in Win/Vista

My computer is setup that you are presented with a screen of named user profiles when it boots up. You login to the one you use, and for me it was the administrative profile. The computer was fine the last time I used it. Then this morning ......

Windows Vista, suddenly the administrative user profile won't load when I login to it (error results). So I look up the error message to see what could be a solution .... says to try to fix a possibly corrupt user profile, use the admin profile to take steps 1, 2, and 3 ... LOL - oh yeah? ... so how do you fix the admin user profile if IT'S the one that's the problem? :frown:

So I saw a suggestion to revert back to an earlier System Restore date. I did that 2 times and no help.

Suspected a virus but checked via HouseCall and it said nothing found.

There must be some way to get back to my administrative profile? That's where all my added software is (can't see/use that stuff from the "guest" profile). I think I may lose my mind as I've been working on this problem ALL day. It'll be 18 hours come 1AM. I think I only have half my hair left Waaaa.

do you have another user profile with admin privileges ?
[can you create one, or are you not even getting to the desktop]

have you tried safe mode ?

the 'administrator' account is usually hidden, and you are prompted to create a 'owner' account that has admin rights when the PC is 1st setup

if so log in with that one, save all of the files in

C:\Users\[user name with the problem]

and then delete the user profile with this issue, when you log back in the profile will be recreated ?

if all else fails are you going to be in Ft Washington this weekend ?

Yes the computer is booting up. I am presented with 3 options to login:

User1 (had admin priv)
User2
Guest

I can get into User2 and Guest, but from those profiles I can not access the files/desktop of User1.

If I try to do something that needs admin permission, I am able to give that password, and usually the action completes, unless loading the corrupted profile is needed, then nothing happens.

Starting to think I may need to find the disks that came with this ancient computer?

try pressing Ctl - Alt - Delete 2 times, you should get the standard windows login prompt

try administrator

[no password]

if that does not work, boot into safe mode and try again

Log in with one of the other accounts. Go to User Accounts admin and elevate the privs of that user to Admin level. You'll need to provide the Administrator password.

There is a known issue with user profiles getting screwed up. You may need to follow these instructions once you can gain priv access to the registry.

How to Fix Temporary Profile in Windows 7

At this point, run CHKDSK and see if it recovers.
If not, you should be able to recover all your data and move it to a new profile.

:yeahthat:

Unless altered after the original install this should work, have done this before on friends computers with Vista.

I didn't alter anything that I recall. I did ctl alt del twice with no results and same from safe mode has no effect.

My OS says Vista Home Premium, does that change anything?

When I used safe mode to access the admin user profile I see no apps or files there as if they are all gone?

Sorry ark, it has worked on every Vista machine i have tangled with.

Back when I had my High Powered 486 DX custom built for me  I was a PC wiz. I could figure out just about anything .... the OS's became more complicated, and I had less time to "play" (was doing family/FT job/College all at the same time), so I got left behind in the PC trouble-shooting arena. I have managed to have few problems because I try to NOT download applications from the internet, but as we go forward in technology, I am finding that I NEED to download apps on the internet, which puts my PC at risk for viruses, etc.

I'm long overdue for a new PC, so I will start shopping for one next year. I wonder how I can avoid this kind of problem in the future? A corrupt user profile that can't be fixed is a serious problem. Maybe I should have 2 admin user profiles on the next PC?

I'll probably bring my PC to work to see if one to the techies can figure it out.

I am having the same exact problem

What did you end up doing? I can get to the admin screen by hitting f8, but when I try hitting manage another account so I can update the other access, it doesn't do anything. This is not how I wanted to spend my day!

I still have not figured it out. Maybe it is a virus that has no fix yet?

And I had AVG running all the time, including my web searches so it must not be documented yet as a widespread issue? Otherwise a virus checker would find it?

I wish someone knew of a fix for this. I assume this type of thing may not be a virus so much as probably being Malware from a website? I'm not well versed on the terms and the solutions as this is my first problem like this.

Hi

Have you tried starting in safe mode to see if there is real Administrator account without a password set.

alternatively P.Nordahl's Offline NT PassWord Editor (for Win NT3.5 to Win 7) can promote a standard user to an admin user

then from that account you can create a new account for your self

UBCD4win is a project to build a Windows PE .
You need a working Windows PC with an Admin account and a XP CD as the source for the project ISO builder

(preferably not a manufacturers OEM XP as non standard modifications to the XP CD cause build errors)

If the PC you are having problems is recent you may have to download a updated set of hard disk controller drivers from driverpack.net

It includes the P.Nordahl's Offline NT PassWord Editor iso image

I would go to the authors site and get the latest version of P.Nordahl's Offline NT PassWord Editor

I wasn't able to fix anything with Safe Mode. Every time I try to update the Malware apps I have I get prompted for the admin password so I enter it then I get an error message but that only happens when I want something to clear up the problem, other prompts for the password work fine.

Looking like I will need to find my original discs and start from scratch? Can't I reload the OS w/o writing over the files I have created? It doesn't need to write over My Documents or the files I have in other apps right? Tell me Windows is smart enough to be able to reload the OS w/o wiping out all my data?

It's supposed to, but I would never trust it. ALWAYS recover your data before performing anything as radical as an OS reload.
