Hmm... Well maybe I just had a bad experience.

But I spent some time up there a few years ago, and I noticed that between the people, the people and the people, NYC was the crappiest place on earth.

Nice buildings though.

And it was still better than L.A.

How long ago???

Pre 9/11. I've heard that since then New York is a whole new world.

I dunno.

I did get a good picture there, though. I was standing on the New Jersey side, and I put my hand up, and the guy taking the picture haunched down and snapped off the pic - and it looks like I'm touching the top of the WTC.

I think I still have that shot somewhere. It used to be framed.

'96 and then again in '98.

Most of our experience is recent but from one end of Manhatten to the other, we've been treated good to great. There was even this little crap diner near the Statue of Liberty, on the Jersey side, we just stopped in to use the can. I bought a coffee and muffin just because they were so nice.

See, and I've had just the opposite experience - NYC folks are nicer than the soccer Moms here in our burg. I've stood there in a subway station trying to make sense of the map and had any number of people come up and say, "Where you going?", then tell me what train I needed to be on. The minute you open a map on a street corner, you have several passersby stopping to give you directions.

I  NY

What the hell funky-ass Bizarro-world version of New York did you end up in?

I can't believe it's changed THAT much post-9/11

Good post, Larry. :yay:

X, someone once said to me, "Which would you rather say - 'Get bent' or 'Hello, I'd like to make a deposit'?"

What that means is that you can b!tch and whine about how crappy your job is and how ungrateful your customers are...or you can put on a happy face and make money. Even if you've treated me like gold because you see the dollar signs, if I see you treat the young couple next door with their Cheerio kid poorly, your tip will go down.

Frankly, your attitude sucks and you should consider other job opportunities that don't involve serving people.
I never treat anyone poorly..not even the cheerio people. being a server is an acting job and when I'm at work I do put on my happy face.I am there to make money. You have no idea how many people tip crappy even when the service is great and the food was good. At my old job we had this one couple who came in at least twice a week, they were rude and never tipped a dime to anyone! And when I got stuck with them I gave them the bare minimum service...wouldn't you???( I was also not rude to them) All I ever said was take care of the server who takes care of you! I never said that bad service deserved a tip...I've even stiffed a server before because they were terrible.

Even the bums are pleasant. My daughter and I were walking home from a show at, like, midnight and we passed this guy sitting there with his cup out. He said, "Excuse me, ma'am, can I buy a cigarette from you?" I said, "No, but I'll give you a cigarette." He was like, "No, you don't have to do that - I'll give you 50 cents for one." :lmao: I'm like, "What the hell is the difference if I give you a buck or two or give you a cigarette??"

Another guy was panhandling the subway car we were in - "Ma'am, can you spare a dollar for an old man down on his luck?" Very polite.

Larry will tell you about his exchange with a panhandler down in Greenwich - he was more amused and entertained than annoyed.

No ####, I'd try and hurry up and figure out which train to take because without fail somebody would ask where we wanted to go and tell us which train to take. I wanted to do it myself!

You never know who people are. I learned a long time ago that the porter at the car dealership could be the used car manager next time you go see them about advertising (which is what I used to do and sort of still do now - sell advertising).

I knew a gal back in Nebraska that got a major inheritance from one of her customers who was richer than God, but never tipped her a dime in all the years he used to go to her restaurant.

It pays to be nice to everyone.

I forgot to mention another wrong with the trip to Damon's. The chicken that my wife ordered had no sauce on it although it was supposed to be on it. Not the server's fault but it didn't improve our visit.

Are we :deadhorse yet?

Yes, it is the servers fault. She knows what you ordered, she knows how it's supposed to be prepared, she knows what it's supposed to look like, and she could see that it wasn't right. She should have told the cook to put the sauce on it before she brought it to the table.

I'm not reading the rest of the responses to see if it was discussed, but no, 15% has not inflated to 20%. The cost of meals rises with inflation, and thus your tip gets raised.

By your logic and standard inflation, you would be getting 100% tips in about 22 years. :lmao:

15% is still the standard. 10%-20% is actually the range. 20% means you did an excellent job... more means your floored them. 10% means room is left for improvement. Nothing means either their cheap or you suck. $.02 is saying you really suck and I am taking the time to show you how much you suck by throwing in my two cents.
