Banning Pitbulls

Ken, I could elaborate but I would probably break the rules. I think you get my drift.

Johnny,

I certainly do not get your drift.  Is it your contention that anyone owning a pitbull is into some form of illegal activity?

Ken,
Yeah I went to the website (that you posted) a couple weeks after the hearing and saw that it had failed.  Oh well we can try again next year!

Johnny,
I would be interested in knowing what kind of element I am, that this area doesn't need.  I own two Pitbulls.

Ken, explain to me what that house bill was so I don't have to try and decipher it.

I think the dog attack in San Francisco has tweaked a lot of people.  Myself included.  If I had to make a guess, I'd say that's the sort of "element" Johnny's talking about.

The "element" that I believe you are referring to has absolutely nothing to do with banning Pitbulls.  Pitbulls and other potentially agressive breeds are attractive to people seeking status and to be used as weapons.  Pitbulls are not a bad breed of dog.  Potentially dangerous, yes, just as a gun or knife.  In the hands of the wrong individual, these animals pose a serious threat.  Improper breeding and training have been the breed's downfall.  Historically, you can look and see that the German Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher and the Rottweiller have also been on this dangerous dog list.   If you ban the Pittbull, the only people to suffer will be the responsible breeders.  People who want weapons are going to get them regardless of any ban impose.

Vraiblonde,

The bill was for the purpose of altering the definition of "dangerous dog" to include a dog that inflicts an injury on a person; requiring a dog owner to be given certain notification if a certain determination is made that the owner's dog is potentially dangerous; requiring certain dogs to be under the control of an adult; requiring a dog owner, who receives a certain notice that the owner's dog is potentially dangerous, to enroll the dog in and attend a certain obedience class; requiring that a certification of attendance be obtained from a certain obedience class and be provided to a certain authority; requiring that a person who owns a certain dog have the dog spayed or neutered within a certain period; requiring a person who owns a certain dog to have a microchip implanted in the dog; prohibiting a person from tying or tethering a dog to a stationary object for a certain period of time or in a certain location; providing that certain provisions do not limit the authority of a county or municipal corporation to regulate dangerous dogs subject to certain limitations; creating certain penalties; defining certain terms; making certain conforming changes; and generally relating to dogs and dangerous dogs and owner responsibilities.

If you want the complete bill I could email it to you but the above is the basic synopsis.

Racism on the brain...that's funny...No, Vrai, I just saw that everyone seemed to be confused by Johnny's comment and no one said anything about the fact that he was being so guarded about this so-called "element" he speaks of...usually when people say crap like that, they are implying racism. That's all.

jimmy's right. Lots of people have used "element" to imply racism. It came up last year during a school redistricting hearing in Bowie.

But it also has other meanings. Do you remember when James Watt stopped the Beach Boys from playing the Inaugural Day concert on the Mall? He said the show would attract the "wrong element." Maybe he was talking about people who get drunk and disorderly. Who knows?

Since Johnny didn't give us more information, I'll take a guess: He implied that only "white trash" own pitbulls. I detest that phrase. It's just as hateful as any racist slurs out there. I don't know your meaning, Johnny, but I do know that lots of people from all backgrounds have pitbulls and Rottweilers. Are they aggressive dogs by nature? Maybe, maybe not. But the ultimate responsibility for a pet's actions lies with the owner.

Tonio, you said that I implied that only white trash own pitbulls. You got your colors wrong my friend. White trash are too good to own pitbulls.

Ah....and now it comes out. How did I know? I guess I've known enough ignorant people in my day to spot it....Wow.  I think we've got us a bon-e-fide racist on our hands! Yippie! :boo:

Missi,
I think that what Johnny was trying to do was not come right out and say "Black people tend to own pitbulls and that's an element that we could stand to do without down here"...shouldn't be surprising that there's still racism in this area but everytime I encounter it, I'm still baffled.
Oh and as for what "white trash" is, missi? Well I believe that'd be "Johnny"...

Okay, Jimmy, you were right and I was wrong.

But Johnny, you're mistaken on your point - white people certainly do own pitbulls, in much greater numbers than blacks.  That's why I figured you were talking about white people being the "element" that the area could do without.

We've tried to play a game in these forums called "Bait the Racist".  Unfortunately, we've never really had one to bait.  So tag - you're it!  Is it possible that you consider gays to be an "element" as well so we can really have some fun?  Be warned, however, that what we REALLY go after are ignorant rednecks so you might want to think about it before you play.

Well wait one second Vrai, you're oversimplifying!  :nono: It may very well make a difference depending on if the gay in question is Gay White Trash or just your average run of the mill gay.  You'd also want to factor in, if the Gay, or Gay white trash owns a pit bull or a poodle?  Could very well make a HUGE difference!  Oh!  I forgot to add..... If the he or she (or a combo) is gay (or straight for that matter) AND from FRANCE, that would most definitely make for one of those "certain elements" in my opinion!  :twitch:
