BG, why would you say that? I truly believe someone can hear me coming much better on my V-Star with the loud custom pipes than they can with my 250 Rebel, aka, lawn mower. I do believe that if nothing else, the loud pipes DO bring attention to the person on the bike which, in turns, lets people know you are there on the bike. Give me the other side of the coin.
The area where it is loud is behind you.

I can hear hubby coming home once he hits halfway down our street, which is about 1/4 mile from our house. I can also hear the riders that will pass my driveway coming out of their driveway and I pause cause I know they are going past my driveway. If I couldn't hear them, I'd pull out and they'd be slamming on their brakes.

I can hear any loud bike on the street and know to look. These kids riding these little things that I can't hear are bound to get run over.

True. But I knew the sound of his custom bike. There was never any question. Even Bug knew it at a young age. Here comes Daddy...

How do you avoid hitting cars?
Cars are easier to see, Aps. I'm talking about the little Rebel coming around a corner, quiet as can be, vs. the bike I have with loud pipes. My mailbox can hide a bike, but if I hear a bike, I know it's coming. Quit it.

I think when you ride a bike or your hubby does or you have been on one, you are more apt to listen for them and more aware of them. I can't tell the difference between hubby's and the guys that ride that live two houses down, but I do "hear" the bikes if they have loud pipes.

I can hear the loud pipes coming and tend to wait until I can see them. I can't count the times the fanatical rice burners have sped past me and scared the crap out of me because I didn't hear them.

My point exactly. I believe that 95% of the people driving are not looking for bikes. If you put extra SOUND into your bike, some of those people will hear it and go "Where the hell is that noise coming from" and give it a moment before they pull out in front of you.

You would look so cute on my 250 Rebel, which, amazingly, is going up for sale in the Spring.

Granted, people drive like a-holes. The only reason I notice you is that your bike is as big as a small vehicle and, then, there is that entire tin-man thing going on.

I wonder if they have custom pipes for that little rascal!?! My last one was a Kawa 750. (4 into 1 headers, and yes, you could hear it approaching)
