Actually last group ride I did (was about 20 back from the lead) the lead rider came back and asked what kind of lights I had on my calipers, he was pulling me out of the crowd in his rear view mirror, so this statement may indeed be false. I was being noticed more then the VTX, and all the Harleys in the group, on my little sewing machine sounding Beemer..

Coming up to an intersection at a high rate of speed, my lights will be noticed before you are heard.
Apples and oranges, the last group ride I was on 5 chicks came up and said they noticed my Harley because it stood out in the group more than the BMW behind me.

Maybe it's the fatigue caused by the noise, maybe it's the attitudes of riders who insist on making annoying noise, or perhaps loud bikes annoy enough drivers to make them aggressive. Whatever the reason, the research shows that bikes with modified exhaust systems crash more frequently than those with stock pipes. If you really want to save lives, turn to a loud jacket or a bright helmet color, which have been proven to do the job. Or install a louder horn.
I didn't know that, but my guess would be bikers who prefer loud pipes for attention also do other things for attention. I like a louder exhaust, but really it's for my ears only. Just sounds neat. Kind of like putting cards on the spokes of your bicycle, or ballons, but they never lasted very long.

Ding, ding, ding... I think this is a key point. We have a tractor trailer and a dump truck and both have 7 inch straight pipes because my men love the sound...

Before they sold you the pipes they should have..

AND lastly..

Light Travels faster then sound.. So do you want to be seen first, or heard first?
Pipes were on the bike when I bought it.

Yea that light is going to do a lot of good when they are looking the other way. But after they hear a louder bike and look to see the source they will get a glimpse of your lights.

BG, why would you say that? I truly believe someone can hear me coming much better on my V-Star with the loud custom pipes than they can with my 250 Rebel, aka, lawn mower. I do believe that if nothing else, the loud pipes DO bring attention to the person on the bike which, in turns, 2. lets people know you are there on the bike. Give me the other side of the coin.
They can hear you coming a loooong time before they see you too.

If loud pipes save lives, imagine what learning to ride correctly could do!
