The military can not stop someone from using insignia in advertising to my knowledge. You just can't say things like, "The men and women of PAXRVR NAS recommend BillyBob's Oil Service!", i.e. the federal government can not endorse any individual, company or product. I don't know if there are actual laws to prevent this, but you can well imagine what the people at BillyBob's competitors would do.... call the congressman and complain.
10USC771 says:

Except as otherwise provided by law, no person except a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, as the case may be, may wear—
(1) the uniform, or a distinctive part of the uniform, of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps; or
(2) a uniform any part of which is similar to a distinctive part of the uniform of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps.

Distinctive part includes insignia.

How did the TV show "JAG" get away with it.

I don't know. I do know that the show consults with the Navy bases in California and films at some of those facilities.

Just to give you an idea of what I was looking at, it is yellow and has some sort of red insignia. Looks like knives of some sort that cross in the middle. Could stare too long cause I would have crashed into Johnny D's sign!

Probably by requesting permission and kicking in some recruiting money. Anything is waiverable for a fee.

Well, the show portrays the Navy and Marines in a very favorable light, so why shouldn't the services be friendly to the show. I understand that JAG has a huge viewership among Pax employees.

Ed Zachary.. the same way they do it for the movies.. To use the service likeness, uniforms equipment etc.. the show/movies leave themselves open for service approval of shows and scripts. Movie with Clint in it.. HeartBreak Ridge?? Was the show about the invasion of Grenada.. was supposed to be an Army movie.. until they saw the script and saw the "jody's".. the brass didn't like the bad words in the jody songs and took away their approval.. like those Jody's were nowhere near as bad as the ones we DID sing, but some old fart general decided he didn't want the Army singing dirty Jody calls, so now the story of an Army Recon Platoon in Grenada is all about Marines..

In The Army Now was approved by the Army Brass and they even agreed to let recruiters set up in the lobby of the theaters when the movie was playing..

As was Stripes.. and even filmed on location at Ft Knox KY..

Not sure if the services PAY anything for it.. I just think the movie companies need ot have permission in writing, and probably pay for use of personel and equipment.. like fuel for tanks etc..

Thanks for the information. In my experience, staying away from official insignia was considered an issue of taste and respect. That would probably be more of an issue with some products than others: "Trojan--the official condom of the U.S. Navy!"
Nope, Doc always gave us Lifestyle. Big box of 200 count sitting on the Quarterdeck next to the liberty log.

'JAG' is one big exercise in recruiting. Sadly, the USN isn't too in touch with the CBS demographics.

Used to be that the first question asked of a recruiter by a prospective pilot was, "Will I fly jets?"

Now the first question asked of a recruiter by a prospective pilot is, "Will I break a hip?"

BS Gal... Whenever I see a post from you I mentally put that avatar face on top of a hot lesbian body wearing nothing but big girl panties.

Sigh... I have to go now.

Ahhhh... I'm back now. Getting back to the original intent of the thread...

From the instant I first spotted the subject sign I found it to be idiotic and offensive to anyone who is close to naval aviation. There are at least a dozen things wrong with that photo.

Maybe the next Burch Oil campaign will be directed towards law enforcement. They will probably use a picture of the officer who always wears hot pants in 'Reno 911' giving a thumbs-up.

I do love their catchy song, though! :guitar: :wah:  'Burch Oil...So much more than just oil' :guitar: :wah:

What talent! That's right up there with the 'Four Seasons Suite' by Vivaldi.

Does anyone get the feeling that some idiot Burch relative is getting paid handsomely as the 'advertising executive'?

By the way, I have lived my entire life without ever having been in a house that uses oil heat. How does it work? Does it lubricate the pipes so the natural gas flows better?

This sign was actually the topic of discussion at our last marketing meeting. Burch really screwed up this time. :ohwell:

Quick question - Why do people think that Burch screwed up when it is a Besche oil sign??

It is obviously a Burch-operated black bag job against Besche. The counter-intelligence and propaganda campaign to win the hearts and minds of SoMD oil consumers has reached a fever pitch.
