Not every public school system is as effeicent as Charles County. We try to be proactive.

I will say this. I went to Chuck County schools until 6th grade and then again half of the 7th and 8th grades. Then I transferred to St. Mary's. I like the teachers better in St. Mary's personality wise but I was far ahead in my lessons than the kids in St. Mary's. I was amazed at the spelling and vocabulary lists that I had when I trasferred. In the 6th grade St. Mary's was being taught what I had learned in 4th grade. But, I did not see the crime and violence that I saw in Chuck County schools. Well, atleast not the school that I went to. My mom yanked me out of school the day that I had a drug dealer walk up to me as I was walking home from school in Indian Head. This kid was trying to sell me pot. He was a middle schooler too. :jet:

Violence is one thing.

The violence at Westlake has decreased, there's almost no violence at Stoddert or some of the other middle schools.

Honestly, and I know I'll be flamed and crucified for this, the violence is worst wherever the most minorities are.

I went to Smallwood 6th grade and Somers for 1/2 of the 7th and 1/2 of the 8th. I did not see much of the violence at Somers. But there were alot of fights at Smallwood.

My fifth grader still brings home words that she learned in 1st grade. She will have 18 "difficult" words and then the teacher will throw in 2 words like "first" and "Monday" Huh?

My son just started CHopticon this year. His English Honors teacher has been out all week and the sub told them she will be out part of next week that she is on a cruise. How can this be allowed? I made a phone call and it was confirmed that she is indeed on a cruise. She couldn't do this over a break? Do teachers live in the real world???? This has me livid and I plan on calling Annapolis about this. No wonder the children aren't learning anything.

Are you serious? You're worried about a week and a half of time the teacher is away? I dare you to give teaching a try. It's got to be one of the most thankless jobs on the face of the earth. You think the day is over for them when the kids get on the bus to go home, when schools out for the summer, weekends? Think again. The paperwork and new system of entering assignments and grades (for the convienence of YOU, the parent) is a nightmare especially for those teaching at the tech center where kids from all three highschools attend. And don't even get me started on pay and benefits. Up until a year ago teachers could look forward to about 30% of their final salary for a pension after 30 years (or more ) of service. 30% of a salary that's waaay below most of the other white collar professions. God only knows how they ever get their student loans paid off on the salaries they give. You can bet that that pension isn't going make the cut and most retired teachers will have to supplement their retirement income by CONTINUING to work after they've put in their 30 years of service unless they've made some really wise investments on their own. They get two (yes two) personal days per year (most people get 2-4 WEEKS at least of vacation time). There's no overtime pay for those teachers that stay after to help your child. Continuing education is a must if teachers want to keep their current salary, so they must go to school and teach at the same time. The administration can make or break the job and if you have to deal with complete and utter a$$holes on the administrative side you might as well drive yourself into the river. OH! and the adorable little students! They are ever so polite and eager to learn. They even come to class every day and are respectful and try ever so hard...NOT (for many).

Hats off to you teachers. Take your cruise, spa vacation, ski trip, whatever and never mind the OP's comment. You couldn't pay me enough to do your job. No, thanks. I'll keep the 4 hour commuting time I spend on the road every day thank you very much and thank God that I don't have to teach any kids.

I think that is pretty evident Andy, schools are no different than our society as a whole in this country as far as that goes.

If your child knows those words, thank your lucky stars. A LOT of those fifth graders don't! I don't know why (what with NCLB and all, that wonderful plan:sarcasm:). Maybe the environment has caused some kind of "stupid" gene.

Not the environment. It's the gas prices' fault.

I remember when I went to middle school - it was a LOT rougher than what it is now - but it seems over the years the 'zero tolerance' policy has done some good.

When my boy moved from TC Martin to Sommers we had no worries... the parents with kids going to Hanson (sp?) were worried. A few even pulled them and put them in private school because John Hanson has such a bad reputation (like Stoddert).

Stoddert's actually a really good school. Much better than that piece of crap school (Mattawoman) on 228.

You lost all credibility with me for that asinine statement.

If you can back that up with factual data then maybe you have a case.

What the hell? Are you living with blinders on? Look at the school violence at any major inner city school in the country and you'll see it reflects what is happening around them in the real world!!

itsbob

I bowl overhand
During the school year, they get 10 vacation days + sick leave. The sick leave builds up after so long, though.

In other words, Bob was talking out of his azz.

But that doesn't answer his question.. How many days a year is a teacher contractually required to work??

Point taken...

But, I don't see any of those minorities going Columbine on the student population...

In fact it seems to me that the white kids are the one's we should be worrying about...
Because that happened one time 10+ years ago.

Yep, okay, it's the white kids' fault.

What about Jena 6? Baltimore? Heck, when I went to Westlake, it seemed like it was almost always started by some black dude kirking out because somebody accidently bumped into him in the hallway or something ridiculous.

I've been there and seen it.

Hello...

Of course you'll see that in the INNER CITY.

There are more minorities that live in the inner city.

You don't want to get into statistics with me because mathematically I could prove just about anything to you using statistics.
