Mine comes up with $795/month whether I use the estimator or calculate it independently. I don't think the calculator estimates are far off. Because our commuting distance is long, my entire monthly car payment and insurance is attributed as a "commuting cost". While it's true I'd have those payments whether or not I had a long commute, the truth is I wouldn't go through depreciation, repairs, etc nearly as quickly and insurance would be less.
Carpooling as I do cuts that in half -- to less than $400/month which is certainly more reasonable and enjoyable. Surprisingly, putting in estimates for commuting on the motorcycle only lowers the cost about $35/month.
