If you commuted only 15 minutes each way, then it's only costing you about $12.50 per day to commute. You could work that extra 1.5 hours and earn $37.50 for your pocket.
But who gets paid to drive to work??? :shrug:sleuth said:Don't forget the cost of your time. Nobody, but you wouldn't be commuting if you weren't working.Mikeinsmd said:But who gets paid to drive to work???
I always figure commute time into any proposed wage. If they're going to pay me for eight hours and it takes 2 hours commute each way, I'm doing 12 hour days for eight hours of pay. Kind of knocks down the hourly rate.Mikeinsmd said:But who gets paid to drive to work???

And if you didn't have to commute, you could work more hours and thus get paid more.

Ok, if you wanna take that approach then you have to figure in overtime. So if you make $25.00/hr x 1.5 (OT) = $37.50/hr x 2 hrs/day = $75.00 x 22 days/month = $1,650.00 you're losing by commuting 2 hrs/day.sleuth said:Nobody, but you wouldn't be commuting if you weren't working. cattitude said:That's the wrong way to figure it. You don't use work pay for your travel time because you wouldn't be at work if you lived closer. That's your "free" time that you would be doing other things, things at home or whatever. Not everyone can just work longer and claim the OT.
Guess it depends on the job. For me, I get to charge OT at my regular hourly rate.cattitude said:That's the wrong way to figure it. Take a poor salaried sap like me x the number of hours I work and it can get depressing....aps45819 said:I always figure commute time into any proposed wage. Now to really mess everyone up, lets think about holidays, vacation & sick days off that need to be deducted......![]()

I make about $25/hour. Thus, I value my free time at $25/hour.
This also goes hand-in-hand when deciding to hire someone to do a job versus doing it myself. I think about how long it takes me vs. them to do the job as a starting point. Then I figure in whether I would rather work the extra hours to pay them, or do it myself. And of course, there's an intangible "enjoyment" factor. Will I enjoy doing it? Or will I be miserable doing it?
