Coyotes in St. Mary's?

One of my trail cameras snagged a picture of what I thought was a coyote, but was not 100% sure. I sent the picture to a friend at DNR and he confirmed that it is indeed a yote and said that the population in St. Mary's has been on the rise for the last two-three years.

what brand and model trail camera took this picture?

Ah, the coyotes. I moved here from the West, so I am used to being awaken up by their yipping in the middle of the night. When a pack catches some nugget of prey (like housecats or small dogs) where I used to live, the screaming of the yipping/barking was unbelievable. It's hard to explain but it sounds very unpleasant and unnerving.
That being said, I have read an article (somewhere?) that mentioned coyotes are now in EVERY state in the US. I've heard of them being in Central Park, even. It's crazy.
Typically, they are fearful of humans and will just run off. In the west, they are skinny and I've seen them running across major streets (comparable to Hwy 235) in the middle of the day. But that was out west where there are more "critters"...my kid's school once had lockdown because of bobcats on the playground. Don't even get me started on the javelina...rattlesnakes, etc.
Interesting, though about the coyotes here in the local area. Definitely do not feed, do not approach and be aware of your small pets.

One more thing about coyotes, they can get over small fences. We knew several folks in AZ that lost their outdoor cats, and small dogs to coyote.
(wasn't Jessica Simpson's maltese/poodle mix snatched and eaten by coyotes?) I don't know, I always keep a watch on my pets and if you see one they will typically run right off. They don't like humans and they are afraid of humans. If one approaches or acts really odd I would be fearful that it could be rabid. Maybe the coyotes can eat some of these deer running around here....

A friend of mine and his buddy shot one a couple years ago in southern Calvert county and DNR confirmed it was a coyote. Have seen one in Huntingtown in our neighborhood, early morning 1:00 am. Checked with a friend who is a calvert county ACO and he said there is a small pack in the Huntingtown area. Have never heard them howling around here, yet. Have heard them howling before out in Colorado, when i was out there.

Coyotes are confirmed to be in every county in Maryland now. A reliable source told me that they were re-introduced by DNR, to all areas of the state, to help control the deer population. I have seen three, or the same one three times, in the Radio Station Road area in La Plata.

Great. Something else to be on the look-out for when I'm walking to my car at 3:30am. I've already had deers, possums, raccoons, fox, rabbits, and cats scare the crap out of me in the dark. Now a coyote could be added to the mix. :frown:

Could be true, I don't know, but what I do know is that while helping control the deer (maybe slightly) they will probably destroy the turkey population...which is just starting to rebound with decent numbers.
