I have heard 3 teachers at 2 different levels of schooling tell me this EXACT thing. They issue the work. Kids just tell them "Nope, I'm not gonna do it." Teachers have no alternative other than send them to the next grade.
Total shame....

Strange, I wonder when this started. My daughter graduated from Chopticon in 96 and went to Lettie Dent. She was taught cursive. My son graduated in 2004, went to Dent and Oakville. He was taught cursive.

Got a couple of practice hand writing books, you know the one, two solid lines with a dashed line in between.

I haven't read all of the responses on this topic but I think learning to write in cursive is very important. It's almost a form of art when done well.
In some ways I think it has assisted me in research that I have done reading old documents that have many spellings and variations of words from the old english versions. Time spent teaching cursive to me is more important than some of the other useless crap that's getting forced down these kids throats.

Cursive 101 has begun!

For a 12 yr old boy, he came along with little fussing. I promised him 15 minutes and set the stove timer. We finished up a couple minutes early, so he was really excited that I let him stop.

Now he's drawing, his favorite thing to do in the whole world. Whenever he's not allowed electronics.

I talked to someone a couple weeks ago that told me the reason our schools are no longer teaching cursive is because they don’t want our kids being able to read the founding documents of this country like the constitution. If they can’t read these documents, they won’t know they have rights they have to fight for. Today at a family gathering, someone said that museums are now printing the words next to constitution displays so kids can read them. You just can’t make this crap up.

So the Christmas vacation is Cursive 101 with Grandma. Boy, is he mad.

I promised he would know how to write his whole name and how to read cursive by the end of the 2 weeks. Next summer will be fluent writing lessons. He will earn video game time depending on how well he does.

Damn. I can feel my inner nun self grinning. And it's an evil grin.

A lot of places still require a "signed" document. Not printed names. Digital signatures are not accepted at many locations including many official Federal Government documents. Only signatures. I am not sure why it was discontinued it. But, it has been going on some time. Just for the heck of it, I think I will dig in to it.

That's been going on for years. The dumbing down of the grading system is across the Board. This only hurts the kids. They are the same schools that demaded a massive salary increase in their "Blueprint For Education". I wonder if the Blueprint was in cursive?

Probably will be an app to create signatures for you. You just have to say Jane Doe to the phone and it writes it any way you will like.
