I figured to see something regarding the single accident (Dubois Road) which happened about a month ago now, but nothing in the Maryland Independent. Do you know the teen girl?

A week later, heard a helicopter land either on Trinity or maybe Kentucky Avenue around 2 a.m.. Nothing in the Maryland Independent.

The girl I'm talking about lives in Bel Alton and was near her home when it happened early Sunday morning.

The only good thing that comes out of these tragedies is that perhaps they save other young folks lives by causing them to wake up and come to some understanding that driving is not a thrill but a responsibility. Both of my sons lost their best friends in high school to tragic, and avoidable, traffic accidents. To this day, I think they, and especially my youngest son, think about them just about every time they drive.

It's unfortunate and tragic that these things occur but maybe, just maybe, there is some "benefit" accrued. My advice to you folks with teenagers...talk to them and try to make them understand that they are not invincible and that they are responsible for their actions. Convince them that strapping on a seatbelt is "cool." Fighter pilots and NASCAR drivers wouldn't think of hitting the gas without them. It might be a corny argument but what the hell, they think we're pretty corny anyway. Seriously, they are listening. There can't be too much worse for a parent than losing a child.

My prayers and condolences to the family and friends of these young people.

We need shoulders on these back roads and the trees that are right on the road cut down!! Maybe it would save a life!!

Oliver Shop Rd. is one of the worse in the county, there are no shoulders, some bad curves, and the road banks wrong in several places and the number of dump trucks that use that road have caused the pavement to go up and down. The pavement drops right into a rut where it meets the dirt shoulder. It needs to be improved, make it like Burnt Store Rd (231) from Rt. 5 to Oliver Shop, at least have a little asphalt after the white line along the edge, instead of the white line and then dirt. Too many people use that road with all the new homes going up in Dentsville and alot use it as a cross county connecter to get over to Budds Creek.
I was a driver of a piece of appartus last night to the accident, and I absolutley hate responding to any emergency on that road because of the conditions, mentioned above, there is also no where for anyone to hardly pull off to let any emergency equipment pass safely, the road needs to be fixed.

I totally agree! I also live in the area...off Trinity Church Road. People drive way too fast on these back roads. Now that it is dark commuting to and from work, it is even more scarier. Had a person on my bumper the other night (Route 6) with his/her lights blaring in my side and rearview mirrors. I was going 55 in the posted 50 mile speed limit. A couple of times it appeared the driver was trying their best to pass me on a double line. Thankfully, I was turning left, and he/she sped around me! If you are that much in a hurry, you need to leave earlier. Just had a bad accident on our road a couple of weeks ago. Teenage girl going too fast on a Sunday morning. The people that lived in the home across from the accident said the car was wrapped around the tree, traveling by herself, though following other teens, trying to keep up. A helo had to come get her, though I have never heard any news about what happened to her, or who she was. In the last month, I have been awakened 4 times to hear ambulances screaming past our home and twice I have heard helicopters landing nearby.

The roads are not the problem...the people driving way too fast is. Common sense is the factor.

Excellent Post...

Great post Nupe! Can I use this? My mother always made me wear my seatbelt and I always have to this day. I just don't understand how anyone, especially adults, finds it "inconvenient" or "uncool" to wear one.

Cowgirl Up
On my way home from work yesterday I came up on this accident right after it happened. At the back of the car on the road there was a basketball and a back pack. I could see one teenage boy sitting in the back seat of the car. A truck pulled over and a guy jumped out and then ran back to his truck and came out with a firemans hat. He pointed at me and yelled stay where you are. Which I did. I was actually to scared to get out. To me it looked like the car was pulled over on the shoulder and the SUV hit them, until after 10 minutes later when I was told to drive on and could see the front of the car was totally smashed in. My daughter goes to LaPlata High and they did not have school today but I am sure tomorrow the place will be a mess. I wondered though if the parents of all these kids knew that they were riding together? I DO NOT allow my daugther to ride with any teenager. And when she gets her license she already knows that she will not have anyone in the car with her other than an adult. This is such a sad thing to of happened.

The pictures were bad enough, I can't imagine seeing it in realtime.

I ended up as a single parent when my son was 18, one daughter 16 and the other one 12. My son was an enormous help to me and he would often have to drive the girls places for me. He was a careful driver (still is) and I have always been a fanatic about the seatbelt. There was an accident involving him, his 16 year old sister and a 14 wheeled box truck that ran a light and hit them. My son and daughter had seat belts on and had minor injuries. My daughter's boyfriend went into the windshield (my son did not realize he didn't have his seatbelt on) and had to have plastic surgery. Grace of God he didn't go thru the windshield. The truck my son was driving had been left to me by my father when he died and I sure am glad he knew how to pick them. The first frame buckled and the second one held. It was a total loss. Since then I know I personally have never liked to pack a vehicle with people and I'm not even a teenager.
