They are better on gas.

The difference is small to non-existent now.

Checked some new car websites:

VW Rabbit is 22/29 for manual, 21/29 auto
Toyota Corolla is 26/35 for manual, 27/35 auto
Honda Civic coupe is 26/34 for manual, 25/36 auto
Mazda3 5 door is 22/29 for both

Has anybody here taught their child to drive a manual transmission vehicle?

I started today with my daughter.

I'm going to go have a brewski.

Back on the road tomorrow.

I never learned how to drive a manual. My parents back then didn't own a manual transmission; automatic only. I've tried it all of a few times but not long enough to get the hang of it. Mostly got frustrated and went back to my automatic. I would have probably never owned a manual but still would have liked to have learned just incase I ever needed to drive one in an emergency.

I have to laugh every time I hear of a carjacker that walks away because he can't drive a stick.
There was a story about one in this month's Road and Track

:gossip: FYI: not saying you're a carjacker

I had a 1994 Sentra manual that was awesome on gas. I drive a 2000 Avalon automatic now and it gets 28-30 mpg. I'm going to miss this car. :ohwell:

My stepmom just turned 52 and still does not know how to drive a manual.

...trying to keep up...
I don't know how to either. I want to learn though, and be 1up on my BF (he's never had to drive one, so never really learned either). haha :lmao:
I have a few friends with manuals...maybe one of them will be nice enough to try and teach me...

I'm looking for a new car and getting desperate for something cheap, but reliable. Maybe if I learn manual, I'll find more possibilities... :pete:

I took my daughter to an empty parking lot to teach her. I'm convinced she gave me whiplash that day. But truth be told, we both laughed so hard we nearly peed our pants. She finally got it after ALOT of practice. Last year I took my son out. He caught on pretty quick, and immediately went out and bought a Mustang GTO five speed

My first vehicle was manual. I bought it w/out knowing how to drive one. I learned...fast!
Parents' bought my sisters both used camaros when they were in college (we had learner vehicles, these were THEIR vehicles). Both were manual. Father taught them how to drive them. Said "If you want to drive, you'll learn." I got the handmedown camaros when sisters bought new cars after graduation. Learned quick. First new car I bought was a manual 94 Geo Prism. Now I have a '05 Ford Focus manual. Easiest stick I've EVER driven. 35 MPG commuting to Silver Spring (at 55-60 MPH)

Progress.

I made her drive it alone today to visit a girlfriend and she ended up driving it to work. Her workplace is on the craziest stretch of route 13 you can find. (about the same as 235)

This is what she's driving: :jameo:

She drives like an old lady, and the darn thing is SO small.

Still...progress.
