DWI Checkpoints

So what is your suggestion for getting these drunks off the road?

How about sitting in BAR parking lots and looking for the fools stumbling out .... or sending in a undercover officer looking for the obviously drunk .... make a note of the drunks , then watch to see who tries to drive away then make the appropriate traffic stop.

it shouldn't too hard on a Fri night ....

They actually do that in Prince Frederick, outside the Green Turtle and Jaspers. Not a night seems to go by that they don't bust people for DUI. I've seen it happen every time we go to the Green Turtle. It certainly is a deterent for us - we will never drink and drive. We moved from NY in August and cannot believe how many DUI's are "handed out" each week here in Calvert. The cops are really on top of the drunks on the roadways around here so you'd think people would be aware of that and stop driving drunk.

We tried to get a cab to pick us up so that we could both drink but there don't seem to be any cab companies around here. Does anyone know of a reliable cab company in Calvert? I feel like I should start a livery service down here - I think I'd make a lot of $$$$$$! :buddies:

I am not sure about Cabs ..... since this a fairly rural area , but welcome to MD.

I dont have a problem with sobriety checkpoints, but the seat belt checkpoint's piss me off.

Oh but MSP promised they would never pull you over "JUST" for not wearing your seat belt .......... :faint:

what really frosts me is the MSP officers out with Night Vision Equipment looking for non compliance ........ they make a big deal out of it because Uncle Sugar gives them extra money for enforcement during, what ???? May is it

Ok, so assume the penalties are stiffened. How are you going to find the drunk drivers to apply the penalties?? Wait until they plow into someone and then say "OH.. he was drunk, let's arrest him.." ? They don't always show themselves by erratic lane changes. I have no problem with a quick checkpoint stop to weed out these drivers. I do not feel it invades my rights. In fact, I believe it's protecting my rights to be able to drive without fear of some drunk jerk behind me.

Most drunk drving arrest don't come from check points. I have posted my thoughts and arguments against them. If you don't have problem getting stopped for no reason at them that is fine, but when you start getting stopped for walking on the side walk outside your home and questioned, ID and searched you'll probably just go along with that too.

Thanks - it is very rural compared to what I'm used to but we love it. It's nice to have some peace & quiet once in a while and to get away from all of the chaos and constant traffic. We're really happy here but would probably be happier if we could have some good nights out without having to worry about driving. Oh well, looks like we'll be having a lot of fun times at home in our backyard this spring & summer! :buddies:

They pulled our buddy over the other night "because the light over her license plate was not operational"! Common, give me a break! Thank God she is smart enough to not drink and drive.

Yes, that is pretty common and they don't give a damn about the tag light, it is to check for other things they might be in possesion of or under the influence. I am not saying that it is wrong to do that since having a tag light out is a violation, just that DUI and drugs is most likely what they have hopes of finding.

Yeah COPS can pretty much claim what ever they want to pull you over, then it turns into:

"Have you been Drinking, do you have any Drugs or Weapons in the Car, Will you consent to a search :jameo: what are you trying to hide by not consenting to a search" - been there had that happen

"well did you pull me over because my tag light is out, or because you want to search my car and plant drugs inside or on my person" - see case in? where the cops own Dash Cam caught him planting drugs ......

lol that question should get you hauled out of your car an planted face down with a knee on your neck ........... :eyebrow:

No I do not TRUST Law Enforcement ........ people in power will abuse the power or demand special privileges .... see cops in MC not wanting to pay speed cam tickets ... I believe DC had the same problem when the DC Gov 1st put up its Speed Cams

What you know I went to another of my favorite forums and I see this thread from about 10 minutes ago.

My wife got pulled over on the way to work this morning. The cop said he saw her take a pill and wanted to check her prescription. She showed it to him and was on her way. That was the only reason he pulled her over. Can he do that?

Even if it is somehow legal for an LEO to do this the officer is doing nothing but hurting the image of cops by making them look like in your face jack booted thugs.

I am not a basher of LEO's I just think they get away with way too much these days.

That is simply awful; my cop friends ask damn near everybody if they will consent to a search. If anybody says, "no", they say "Have a nice night, & drive safe!"

THAT is a load of crap. What an invasion of privacy to be asked for a prescription. You'll see me go to jail someday if that ever happens to me, because I'm going to refuse. A good lawyer would have a field day with that. My doctor should know my medical history, not the police.

It makes me sad that all the good cops out there have their reputation tied up with cops who do stuff like that.

Somebody in that thread made a good analogy, "That would be like getting pulled over for lighting a cig. on the premise it could be weed"

I suppose you have a problem with the security checks at airports? I mean they are stopping you for no reason since you aren't guilty of anything.

You are getting on an airplane owned by a private buisness, when you buy your ticket you agree to their terms. Just like anyone that wants to come to work at the power plant, you want to come on site and work, I am going to search you, you don't want to be searched you are free to turn around and leave. There is a difference in every analogy you have given so far.

I pay taxes, taxes fund roads that makes them public, I should have the right to travel on them unmolested unless I give PC I am doing something illegal.

Your rights are not absolute. You should know this. You can't use free speech to incite violence. Your right to free speech does not include using it to stomp on my right to freely speak. Driving drunk is a violent act. When our society has shown they don't have the discipline to behave on our roads it's the responsibility of those that are paid, by my taxes, to protect us from this lack of discipline. Not only do I expect this from the people I pay taxes to protect me, I demand it. And you can't demand our law enforcement protect us and then question the means in which they do so, and when they don't, complain that they aren't doing a good enough job. Your take on the 4th leaves us all in an impossible situation.

LOL, ok. I see you are done with the analogies to try to prove your point and have resorted to basically saying your take is down right wrong.

Here are some points I left out of my last post.

1) Checkpoints do not occur on the planes, they occur in the airport. Who owns our airports? The security at the checkpoints are not hired and paid by the airlines, they are hired and paid by the fed.

2) Airport (not airplane) security is mandated by the FAA and Homeland Defense not the airlines.
