Ear Infection Woes

Catt, the EVO has helped her and TY for your help! I notice she is not biting and scratching as much, but she is still licking and sneezing with a few scratches in between. I think it's the grass and oak trees in the yard that the allergy test said she is allergic to. But overall, she is doing a lot better and has energy again!

Have you tried the salmon or fish oil? That will really help her coat and the itchiness. For the yeast, try some acidolphilus. :yay:

well i go back to the vet next week i will see if bruno has put any of her 2.5lbs she lost back on again and see if her yeast infections in both ears is gone . if not i will talk to the vet and see what she wants me to do. the dog will only stay with a certain food for a few weeks at a time then she wants something new but as long as I can get her to eat what I got I am going to stay with it. I don't want to switch her again as it messes her tummy up and I don't like doing that to the dog.

The vet really didn't help me when it came to food suggestions. My dog was the same way, I gave her a food, she liked it for 3 weeks then didn't want it anymore. I found she seems to stick with fish. I used the purina salmon sensitive skin and stomach before I found out about the corn and grain issues and now it's the EVO Herring & Salmon Formula. She eats it and now and then I'll add in some yogurt or cinnamon and she loves it.

I have the nature valley fish oil tablets that I can try giving her again, I figured it might be an overdose since her food is the Herring & Salmon Formula and her treats are also salmon and fish. Her treats are also the grain free and the good stuff. I'll check into the acidolphilus also. Thanks :)

Give it a shot, won't hurt her. Doggies have the same issues with yeast as humans.

Yogurt doesn't give enough probiotics (unless you feed a ton) so it's worth it to spend a little money and get an actually dog supplement.

Go to pepper's pantry and check out their food selection.

I stopped at Fresh Pet yesterday on 301 and picked up a bag of Taste of the Wild (TOTW) and I didn't even mix it in to his current food - just gave him the TOTW straight. I am just so distraught by how that one ear is doing so badly and I hope the food change will help him.

We have started carrying a salmon oil w/ probiotics combination supplement as per the suggestion of a customer.
TOTW and EVO contain probiotics and are both grain free. Have had many favorable comments from customers about both.

this morning i cleaned out brunos ears and they looked good. I didn't get any junk out and i went in as far as i could with my finger. I guess I will find out next week if bruno has to go back on meds again. I am hoping not as I am tired of messing with her ears (it makes me sad as she cowers in the corner and groans when I clean them out ).

My mastiff i use to have got ear infections a lot. I figured out if i cleaned her ears twice a week with wipes it stopped the ear infections. My other mastiff has had maybe 3 his whole life. Cleaning her ears took a whole five minutes of my time. It's not that big a deal...............

She wouldn't be the first - I've been there, done that with critters AND people, so I totally understand where she's coming from. It's not always easy for a person to learn how to be more assertive or self confident with critters, especially big dogs, but I had to learn or my prior Rottie rescue was going to have me doing what HE wanted all the time.

You gotta admit that SOME dogs are just picky eaters, that said, I believe Cesear Milan proved a dog would eat the food you give him if you do it right. I saw that episode and about flipped when he had that dog eating <gasp> dog food :eyebrow: .

Part of the problem with Bruno is that she runs you. You allow her to be the boss.

I don't understand why she has to be on a large breed food? She just needs a quality food. And if she has "yeasty" ears, all the medications the vets prescribe do nothing but mask the issue and make her worse in the long run.

Bruno will eat when she learns that you are in control...not Bruno.

That's why the lady was calling on Cesear - her dog was losing weight being picky about food. Was losing a lot weight too. After he was able to help the dog eat dog food, they later found out the dog had cancer (or something similar that killed the dog) so the lack of interest in food wasn't a behavioral thing at all in that case sadly.

I used to serve meals to a human picky/complaining eater - eventually I stopped cooking and the person didn't starve, so I guess they figured out how to feed themselves  . Of course dogs can't do that but ....

I have a lab like this. She is almost 7 years old and has a lways had swallowen, itchy, bleeding, smelly ears. we have had to 3 different vets, on different types of foods, only allowed inside no outside, antibotics, steriods, live virus, you name it. To this day we have never been able to find out what the cause of her painful ears is. The only thing that seems to work was the steriods but you can only have a dog on them for 10 days and the minute you take her off, the next day the infection is back. I feel so bad for her and wish I could make it all go away.

Interestingly that is what the Vet said to me about my dog, that using Pred off/on may be all I can do for him. I would not want that to be the answer to this. So that's why I am experimenting with different foods based on their protein/grain content. MAYBE I can isolate the allergen that way, if not maybe the swab test will show something?

Does the problem make YOUR dogs ears smell? Did you try any non-grain foods? Different types of protein? Did the vet ever swab the ear to grow and identify the possible culprit?
