ok so that's why I was thinking to try the TOTW Salmon ..... I wonder if I should try that first?

If not then where can I buy Venison?

It'd be good to try him on a novel protein, like venison, rabbit, fish, etc. You want to find something he hasn't had before if you can. I'd stick with a grain free just to make sure he's not allergic to any grains.

Did you start the salmon? I'd suggest going to a pet food store (not petsmart or walmart) and looking through all of the different types of food available. There are several grainless novel protein foods out there.

I am thinking I'll try the TOTW Salmon first unless I get info on a different one to try ... I prefer to stick with a commercially processed food if possible.

i took bruno back to the vet yesterday her yeast infections are gone :). the vet told me to make sure I keep her ears cleaned out and I said I would. I will have to do them 1 time every other week for the rest of her life.

you know what you might want to have your vet swab the dogs ears that is how they found out what kind of infection bruno had and they treated her for it. I give bruno everyday in her food some vanilla yogurt (the vet said it was fine as long as I didn't give her too much and I don't give her that much just enough to lightly coat the food).

Bruno has a bad habit now of eating during the middle of the night while I am sleeping and then all day shes groggy from eating so late. I try to take her for walks but she doesn't walk good on a leash which stinks because if she did she and i would take nice walks everyday. She walks good for my stepdad but not for me it makes no sense. she loves to take the leash in her mouth and try to drag me to the ground. :(

Hmm, you just need to get some help from someone who knows how to handle dogs well. They can show you how to take control of her and get her to walk well with you too.

I used to think that being dominant with a dog was mean, but got over that when one of my then-new rescue Rotts tried to take me to the ground (and no leash was involved) ..... He sure was a big challenge. He never bit me, but it could have escalated to that had I not changed my attitude/demeanor with him.

Walking your dog should be a pleasure, so get someone to help you and you'll be loving life walking her all the time.

What? Groggy from eating late? Uh, no. And don't you control when you feed her? How is she eating late when you're feeding her twice/day?

I'm with you on that as I'm afraid to hurt him by inserting q-tips, but I KNOW I need to learn how to do it. Plus it's hard to clean their ears when they won't stand still and LET you do it.

I have a suggestion that may help with cleaning the dogs ears. With my dog, I rub her ears daily. I do it very gently. I start in the middle and kinda like you are pinching and rubbing salt between your thumb and index, gently rub all the way to the point of the ear. My dog likes it and will start closing her eyes because it feels good. I have never had a problem with her not allowing me to clean her ears and I'm wondering if this is why.

Update ......

Okay so after the pred for a week and the ear ointment, my baby's ears didn't stink anymore and I keep checking day after day - I THINK it may be starting again .... crap! I successfully switched him over from the Bison TOTW to the Salmon (even the slow mix-over produced diarrhea).

Update on ears

Well we're at the end of bag #2 of TOTW Salmon, and I have bag #3 ready for him to start. So it's been about 2 months on the new food. His ears are STILL an issue. I treated his ears for 1 week every other day with a solution I got from a friend 2 weeks ago, now I've increased it this past week to every day. Still see brownish gunk coming out of his ears and he is digging.

Well 2 days ago he started yelping again when he digs in his ears, and the inside of his ears are inflamed again. So I started him back on 1/2 Pred 2 x a day for a few days to help ease the inflammation. The vet said that allowing his ears to continue being inflamed could cause bigger problems eventually requiring surgery, not to mention it being uncomfortable for the dog. My vet said some dogs require constant attention to their ears and an off/on approach with Pred to keep inflammation under control (after not finding any allergy issues).

... soon I think it may be time for the allergy test (blood).

I'm guessing it's allergies. My dog scratched her face up and is missing fur and the skin by her mouth, where she is scratching, is purple. I took her to the vet and they said it's from allergies and she also had hookworms and another parasite from large animals like cows, deer or horses, usually a small amount they say is from rabbits. I have caught her eating rabbit poop, but she hasn't been around large animals. She has never missed a interceptor pill so I just don't know what's going on. I ordered the allergy shots, but it takes awhile for them to come in. Right now she is also on Prednisone and they gave her another pill for the hookworms. She has been one expensive but loving dog!

I have a hound mix and we struggled forever to heal his ears. I found a product called Ear Care With Comfrey by Solid Gold. Now, I clean everybody's ears and use a couple of drops of the Comfrey afterwards. We were amazed at the results. You can buy it at Clipper's Canine Cafe in Solomons (across from the boardwalk).

Speaking of parasites - there is a series I have seen a few episodes of about parasites, and I am now feeling quite nervous about how many of US may be living with parasites inside us? It doesn't always cause a problem for humans, but it's scary to think what CAN happen.

Monsters Inside Me : About the Show & Episode Guide : Animal Planet

Really makes you want to be careful about what you eat, where it comes from, traveling, etc.

eeewww no way ........ that's how 1 gal ingested a parasite ...... it was awful what happened to her - she ended up with a huge mass of worms in her intestines that almost killed her. How come we don't de-worm ourselves now and then like we do our critters? Hmmm ...... :eyebrow:

mmmmmmm sushi!!!!
