It’s unclear whether Walz’s verbal errors will undercut his credibility with voters. But the need to continually clean up those claims could politically hurt Walz and Harris, who are locked in a tight race with Donald Trump and JD Vance. And in some cases, key members of Harris’ circle weren’t aware of some of the inaccurate statements until they became public despite the vetting process, according to four people familiar with the conversations who were granted anonymity to discuss the matter.
“Any time you are forced to go off message is never welcome,” said Mike Mikus, a Democratic strategist in Pennsylvania. “But in the end, voters are looking for somebody who is more concerned about what these candidates are going to do to improve their lives than, ‘Did he get every single fact correct?’”
The most recent example came Tuesday, when a CBS debate moderator pressed Walz over his claim that he had been in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, when Hong Kong was still under British rule (Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997). Walz over the years had said publicly he had been in Hong Kong during the crackdown in Beijing, including 10 years ago in Congress.

But when confronted with these and other troubling examples of waste, fraud and abuse, some state agencies working under the administration of Democratic Gov. Tim Walz repeatedly minimized or dismissed the allegations, the state’s nonpartisan auditor, Judy Randall, told CNN.
A CNN review of audits – and the responses they prompted – as well as interviews with statewide politicians and pundits, found that Walz has been a hands-off leader when it comes to seeking accountability for episodes of fraud and mismanagement on his watch. What’s more, some state agencies headed by his appointees have responded defensively in recent months to the audits – a dynamic that Randall, who has worked in the department for 26 years, has found surprising.
Randall told a local media outlet this summer that the responses of some agencies to her audits have had a “shoot the messenger” feel of late. CNN reviewed more than a dozen reports from her office that held specific agencies responsible for allowing fraud, waste or mismanagement on their watch during the Walz administration.

But Lozenski, Tim Walz’s most important education appointee, has been even more explicit than that. He has called for the overthrow of the government of the United States, as I wrote here. This is a quote from the man whom Tim Walz chose to represent his views on public education:

The Democrats’ eleventh-hour selection of the far-left Tim Walz as Kamala Harris’s running mate may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Walz, through his actions and through his appointments, says the quiet part out loud. He hates America and wants to “overthrow” and “deconstruct” our country and our government because we are “irreversibly racist.”
This is why Elon Musk is right when he says America’s future is on the line in this election. It is the first time that an explicitly anti-American ticket has tried to take over the Oval Office. We can’t let that happen.
Tammy Bruce made an interesting comment last night about others commenting why Kamala didn't pick Shapiro or Kelly. Has anyone considered they said no, and Walz was the only one left?
