Employment @ Lexington Park

I have a friend that has been actively seeking employment in the Lexington Park area for a year now. He has a Bachelor's degree and clean history, but hasn't been able to pick up a professional job. Do you think its a who you know atmosphere around here instead of what you know? Most people tell him that he didn't get the job because of lack of experience. I had the same problem when I was actively seeking full time permanent employment. Answer me this...How in the world do you gain experience besides learning and applying yourself in the classroom if you've been going to school full-time? I see people with no experience and NO education get great jobs because of someone they know. Just isn't fair. :smack: It almost makes you feel like a degree is just a piece of paper.

A degree is just a piece of paper. What kind of job is your friend looking for and just how much real experience does he have?

It is hard at times to break into the industry. I have three degrees and contemplating my 4th, but as I went to school, I also held a job.

Some say that the degree is just a piece of paper, and in some instances that may be true, I can only speak from my personal experience, that it took both the education and the willingness to work at gaining the experience needed to compliment my degrees. I started on the low end of the totem pole and worked my way up concurrently as my education was being furthered.

A degree is something that someone should be proud of obtaining but should realize that it is only a small piece of the puzzle. A degree can be worthless when comparing it to people that have actual hands on experience. Did he not hold a job at all for the years he was attending college?

Well it depends what that degree is in. If he majored in liberal arts then he is getting exactly what he should have expected.

It also depends if he went to a real (accredited) school or not. The school I got my degree from had a career services center that actually got you interviews while you were in your last semester. That is how I got my job.

That is because a degree is just a piece of paper... Perhaps he is applying for jobs that are "too high" on the ladder. He may have to apply for jobs that are in the same field, but on the lower end to get his foot in the door. Then he needs to prove himself to the company and work his way up.

Actually, he has been applying for those jobs at the bottom of the ladder. He is a well spoken, friendly individual. I often rehearse interviews with him and he is very good. Trust me, we have tried everything. It just sucks because he is now starting to doubt himself. Thanks for your help though! :yay:

my hubby has the opposite problem.........he is 15 credits from a degree and he has about 7 years exp. but most of the employers tell him that once he gets degree to call them because the contracts he has been applying to work on call for Bachelors.

He has no related job experience to his degree. He's been working full-time temporary jobs. He's looking for an entry level finance analyst job.

You are exactly right.. I work for a consulting company, I dont know anyone without at least a bachelors due to the contracts call for that and clearances... Also if your Ex-military you have a good chance of sealing a job down here for yourself.

It is highly unlikely you will get on with a professional company in a tech/pm roll without a degree.

I know someone that works for our company she is data entry and she has her associates. Very hard to just get on board with a highschool diploma !!! Its almost unheard of...

He couldn't do the full time thing because he was going to school full-time. He did work full time summer jobs while school was in recess. He's obviously not looking for the managerial, mid level, or exec type job. He's just trying to get his foot in the door. He wants to go back to school for IT, but works about 50 hour weeks at his temp job. He gets home pretty late at night, so he doesn't have much time.
