So I've recently moved, and now for the first time in my adult life I'm in a nice and friendly neighborhood. Until now, I've been surrounded by hostility (or at best apathy) - or in a house alone on land outside of a proper "neighborhood."

Anyway, my neighbor just left me a goodie-bag. An extremely nice gesture - and I'm not used to that. So I'm unsure of what the etiquette is.... should I go introduce myself? Should I bring a gift? I would like to acknowledge that I got it, and there's no telling when we'll see each other in passing outside. But I don't want to come off creepy or threatening by showing up on their doorstep rapping at the door.

I don't understand this "nice" that people keep doing here.

Do you want to make friends or do you want to be the weird hermit guy the kids tell stories about at Halloween?

The friendly thing to do would be to knock on the door and thank them. Go in if they ask you, exchange a few pleasantries, then say, "Well, I have a lot of unpacking to do...."

The hermit guy would immediately post a bunch of "No Trespassing" signs and yell at them to get off your lawn.

I do hope that continues for you. I live in a "friendly" neighborhood, but it only takes 1 to sour the hood.

If you know which neighbor left the care package, why not go over and thank them? Possibly share the same story you wrote in the OP. Might spark conversation and lead to interesting things in common. Nothing wrong with some old-school neighborly interaction.

Agree for the most part but I do have friends who are terrific people and one of their neighbors was such a psychopath nightmare they sold their house and moved.
And then there used to be the guy here that was psycho and beat up his washer with a golf club.

I'm fortunate to have great neighbors. 😊

Just sneakin' around....
I have good neighbors NOW. When I first moved in, it was a terrific place, then the people across the street moved out and the house became a rental. Renters from hell with kids from hell. Woke up around 3am hearing a very loud scraping noise, got louder and closer. Car pulls in front of the rental, hits the phone pole, but it didn't matter because it had already been in an accident, bags deployed, front gone, no wheel.... called the cops. Fireworks that always landed on my roof. They eventually moved out, and the people there now are quite nice, but they said the inside was a disaster and required major repair.
