FINANCING the ENGAGEMENT RING...

They totally aren't the same thing.

A woman doesn't need a big rock when its time for you to propose....thats something you want to give her for the whole "bragging, yeah this is my future wife" type effect. A $100 gold band would suffice....something you wouldn't have to finance!

Finance your needs, not your wants.

Fools paying major interest on materialistic items all for "show".....

I fail to see any difference.

A house and a car are also all materialistic items for show.

I can rent an 3 bedroom apartment for 800 bucks a month. It may be a complete ####hole, but it's a roof and has a functioning stove and refrigerator.

I can buy a death-trap car that has 7 different colors of paint visible, belching smoke with bald tires for $400 outright, or I can get a rental or ride a bike.

But I want to live in a house with a yard, that has central air conditioning and a central vacuum system, and I want to drive an SUV that sparkles in the sunshine and has 75 cup-holders.

I can buy my fiancee a plain piece of copper, but I want her to have a nice gold with a carat or two worth of diamond on it.

What's the difference?

Who in the blue hell is considering a house and a car something someone has for "show"

come on now
The house to some extent, can be considered for show. Who really NEEDS a 500k house? I've seen couples with no kids in huge houses just because they can. Again, it's their money and to some extent it's an investment, but could they have been just as comfortable in a 200k house and less then half the payment? Probably..

I've got a "show" truck.. It's one I've always wanted since I was a kid, but could I have done with a smaller car? You bet, and it's one of my purchases from the past I regret, as in "Imagine what we could do with this money I pay out every month for this truck that sits in the yard 90% of the time!" I should have gone with the Cabrio my youngest daughter wanted, at least my payment would have been half of what it is now. (to my credit I did buy the truck used, so I paid less than half of what it would have been new)

We all learn by our mistakes, but the real smart ones (not me) would learn from other's mistakes.

Did you pay cash for them?

And did you really need them? Probably not, you probably could have saved money.

Yes I paid cash. Because I "got it like that." and so does my man...

why not get an older car that you have the cash for, or a small house that you can pay off. Because you really don't need anything bigger.

 That's what I did. I bought a used car with LOW miles, and a townhouse that I bargained down the price on. Because of that I have a lot more disposable income (AFTER putting money in savings!) and I can do stupid things on a whim like fly to bermuda for a weekend, or leave for vegas the day after tomorrow.

Well I'm in good company then, because so is everyone else who lives in anything better than a hovel, and drives anything better than a hooptie-mobile.

I don't see what's wrong with wanting something nice, getting something nice, and then paying it off.

The only way it would be foolish is if it were financed for more than you can afford. For instance, if you bring home $2000 a month, it would be foolish to finance a ring for more than, say $400-$500, depending on your other bills.

But just the fact that something is being financed does not mean that it is beyond your means, or foolhearty to get it.

Many couples can sell their $100K home they purchased many moons ago for a good profit and easily afford a $500K house. The point is, we don't need a lot of stuff we buy, but if it is a want that is affordable to the individual(s), that's their game...

A Ford, its used and paid off.

I could get something new, but I dont want to.

Paid off... That implies that at one time it was financed? Is it a bottom of the line Escort with no a/c, manual windows and locks, a radio with a tape or cd? What size engine?

Ah but that's the difference between a house and almost anything else. A house appreciates in value which is what makes it a reasonable risk as an item to purchase by financing.

Rings, cars, handbags, etc... Not so much.

Financing an engagment ring vs. financing a car is NOT the same thing.
