Many couples can sell their $100K home they purchased many moons ago for a good profit and easily afford a $500K house. The point is, we don't need a lot of stuff we buy, but if it is a want that is affordable to the individual(s), that's their game...
I agree, it's their money. But I look back and think, "If I did this different or saved the money..." I could be retired and independently wealthy already.

Again, to some extent the house is an investment and sooner or later will pay dividends.. but if they bought half the house and invested the difference in payments they'd probably end up much richer in the end.

Young people should take a minute and think.. If I buy this I can be happy for a little while.. If I don't buy this, I could be retired at the age of 40 and be happy the rest of my life.

But I know, I'm old, what the hell do I know... I do know know one thing. Starting late in life I know I don't want to be working at Wal-Mart when I'm 70 years old so I can afford to put food on my table.

My dad retired at 48 years old. He doesn't have to work now because he made good decisions. That's not the typical retirement age I realize and I think my dad is extremely fortunate.

Financing an engagment ring vs. financing a car is NOT the same thing.

I say it is.

Piece of tin ring = 1974 AMC Gremlin.
It gets the job done. Barely.

14 Carat Gold w/ 2 Carat Diamond = Brand spankin' new Ford 250
It gets the job done with style and you can't help but grin when you're using it.

I don't see anything wrong with financing an engagement ring. I'm going to have and wear this ring every day for the rest of my life, shouldn't I love it? My engagement ring has a matching wedding band. He could have paid cash for just the engagement ring, but it was be cheaper in the long run to buy the set and pay it off in a year with no interest.

If he paid it off without interest, it wasn't financed...

When you start to devise a budget for your ring and solicit advice on the matter, the two-month rule will come up. That is, your salary over a two, or even three-month period, is a common benchmark to judge how much to spend, according to Mr. Pius Kaufmann, a diamond expert and founder of the exclusive Kaufmann de Suisse jewelry stores, with locations in Montreal, New York and Palm Beach. Take that to mean whatever you want it to. Some men spend more because they may have other disposable income from another source and some men spend less and find a more than acceptable ring to bestow on their significant other. The choice is yours.

I don't know if he could return it or not. It's not like the band has been worn or anything. I doubt it's something he checked into. But he'll have to call the damn thing off. I've got too much time invested in it now :lmao: And if he calls it off, he deserves to be stuck with the ring.
