I remember that! The sign was sky high with a big yellow smiley face! I LOVED when we would get off of swim practice (at the Elks lodge) and my Mom would stop there and get us burgers! (And wasn't the building an A frame?)

Or we would go to Hardees on Great Mills Road and get Huskee Jr's!

:yeahthat:

10-4 that was the place it was a big A frame type building with the big sign out front right on 235.

Now I am Jonesing for a Happy Hamburger.... can't even try to make a replica cuz it's Friday. No meat for us during Lent.... Anyway,

I sure do miss the old days. You couldn't go into a store without seeing someone you knew. Now it seems like I can go a week in and out of several stores and never see anyone that I know.

I guess they call that progress.

You're as old as I am.:buddies: How about the Deli, Rx all, kings 5 & dime and the Hub? Those were old when I was growing up

Oh the Hub - home of the corduroy Levis that came in 99 different colors! I had at least 12 different colors. Then there was Deitz Shoes right next to the Hub - the place where I bought my first pair of Nikes. I'm sounding as old as the rest of ya! :cds:

Does anyone remember the name of the restaurant that was next to Raley's Home Furnishings on Great Mills Road? I think there is a sports memorabilia place there now. That used to be where the who's who of STM County used to hang out - kinda like Linda's Cafe today.

Surely you jest ...
OK I'm old, I'm with the Suitland Ginos memory.

Years before...the Robert Halls and Kenny's shoes. How I hated school shopping.

Yes you are old, my parents did alot of school shopping at Robert Hall and then went next door to Kenny's for shoes. You remember when Robert Halls became Morton's? Before it became Morton's my parents did alot of our school clothes shopping at the Mortons on Pennsylvania ave and Minnesota Ave in southeast.

Guilty as charged your honor, we used to go back way in ...hit Naylor Road hang a right down a long hill. That trip I liked, we always got Chinese food for dinner at the place across the street from Morton's in what they now would call a strip mall. I only got pantyhose and socks there though they were less expensive, I went through them like water. Of course at my moms suggestion and reasoning (excuse to get her Chinese food) :) lol

I worked at that Suitland store for about a year and a half as a school job 1970-71. It was one of the busiest stores in the D.C. area. Sold lots of chicken and fixins. The manager, Ozzie, ran a tight ship, and was a stickler for cleanliness. Many nights we had to stay to scrub the 14 pressure pots with Brillo pads until they sparkled. The store constantly won awards. I learned a lot from Ozzie, and through the years have looked back on being part of the store's success.
We had good kids that worked there, good times, and sometimes, a little mischief. Glad I had the opportunity to be a part of it!

I remember the Gino's chain, but I don't think any of the restaurants in our area lasted very long.
We had a McDonalds, Burger Chef and Red Barn. Those I remember as Choke and Puke.
I do not have fond memories of fast food, a life long aversion to it.

Ginos was bought by Marriott International and converted to the Roy Rogers chain before they sold out to Hardees in 1988. A few remained in the hands of franchisees as Roy Rogers for several more years before finally closing. Former employees of the original Ginos tried to make a come back with the first one opening in Aberdeen MD I believe in 2012 or 13 and closed several years later.

I posted this in another thread awhile ago, but there used to be a Gino's in the St. Mary's Square Shopping Center in Lexington Park back in the 70s.

Here I thought Roy sucked up Hardees. It may have been one of those things were the franchises took a name based on the region.
I remember more Roys up home than Hardees. That was into the late 90's.
There was a joint right before the bridge into NJ, it's the one that kept changing hands. It was a Burger Chef at one time, I thought prior to Burger Chef it was a Gino's. When I was in college it was the closest place to get food on nights and weekends from where I worked.
One of us would leave the building while the other covered to cross the river and get food.
I remember the heartburn well.

Marriott decided to get out of the FF Business and sold RR off to Hardee's ...
Hardee's went about converting former RR locations [ that I saw in the Washington DC Area ] to Hardee's Restaurants
The News Reports I heard a couple of quarters later ...... Haredee's sales were in the crapper, people were pissed at the closing RR.
Suddenly [ again in the DC area ] I saw 2 Hardee's get converted to RR ..... others followed elsewhere
Eventually RR was sold off to McDonald's ... I watched RR after RR get closed or converted to McDonlad's

Marriott bout RR and started converting locations into Hardee's ... 2 quarters later after staggering complaints and sales losses

Sudden Hardee's were turning int o Roy's

Several years later the Fuk Heads at Marriott Decide to get out of the FF Business and sells out ot McDonalds - Queue the End of Roy Rogers

Only to return some yrs later after having only survived at Travel Plaza's

Roy's is far and away my wife's favorite fast food place. She'll drive over to Solomon's if given the chance.

I guess I always liked the fixin's bar. There was a Roy's at UMCP in the student union, and I met a girl one day who showed me a trick I've used since -
Pile on the pickles on one side - flip the burger over and pile on the onions. Easy to put in without falling out and makes your burger go further.
