I Love WFH but this is on You .... NOBODY was asking you to do all of this

Well that's not true. When you work in an office they typically want you to look presentable, especially if you're interacting with clients or higher-ups. For women that means doing their hair and makeup.

A common theme I'm reading between the lines here in this thread is that we have too many government workers.

I had a whole tirade I just typed concerning WFH government employees, but just deleted it - it's best I keep my mouth shut - already said too much. This is a hot button topic in an area like ours and the answer is not an easy one.
The thing is that is easy to say from the sidelines. If you ever had to wait on something like the VA or a resolution from the Social Security office you would think the exact opposite.

At least with the DoD the work still needs to be done, unless you advocate cutting corners in flight testing. Do you suggest doing less testing and just trust the contractor gave the government what they need the first time?

Last time "cutting costs" just resulted in unmowed grass and dirty offices while working in the dark and sweating.

This is a YOU Problem ....

I worked for a Contractor In Hollywood for 4.5 yrs ..... most all of the women wore jeans and nice shirts / tops ... Fridays T-Shirts yeah they all probably had SOME level of SIMPLE Makeup on .... but NOTHING Noticeable .... a couple of the Manager's might have had on the occasional dress or skirt ... and VP's coming in from Out of Town

I've got the same problem with the ' every guy ' should Collared Button Down Shirts and Slacks wear ties to look ' professional '

Flight Testing is ONE SMALL Part .....

It is, but the question that needs asked before anything is "what work is not necessary?" Unfortunately it is usually the necessary work that suffers more than the unnecessary work from everything I have seen in my life time.
There are definitely places where they could trim the fat, but others have been running lean for years.

A 10% cut would probably have zero effect on F35. A few days to shuffle people around (if even that). A 10% cut to pass and ID might mean 3 hour lines for access to the base and 6 month wait to get a new ID.

You can bet your ass if there is a single person cut from security it will take an hour to get into the base.

Personally I’m against it, traffic is bad enough without adding a couple hundred more cars to the mix.I really like coming in on Friday when most of the base is off.

But think of more EV sales to get those people to work again. And with the $4.5 Billion that hasn't been spent for EV charging infrastructure, can now be used to place those EV chargers at all federal workplace parking lots. It's a win-win.

Change is on the horizon. Gotta go and buy more Tesla stock now .......

Yes and no. Reducing the deadwood is a good thing, but from past experience, a contractor working on a govt contract costs far more than a govt employee doing the same task.

One contract I was working on cost the program $145,000 per year, my (unburdened) salary was around $60,000.
True, but the cost of your benefits package and 10% of the 3 High comes to about the same I'd guess.

Not really anymore. My last ID they asked if you want to use the same picture. You only had to go in and pick up/turn-in.

I could name a dozen post offices that need to be shut down and consolidated with another office.
West to east old ocean city rd.......
Salisbury to Parsonsburg 5 miles, to Pittsvlle 1 mile, Pittsville to
Willards 4 miles, Willards to Whaleyville 4 miles, Whaleyville to Berlin 5 miles.
That's 6 PO's in that stretch. 2 can easily be cut.
Pretty sure Delmar, Md and Delmar de share a police station and some schools as well. No idea about post offices.

I'm not sure that cuts to the Postal Service has any effect on saving money, since they more or less function as a completely separate entity from the government. They may get a few billion from the government - because they are still operating in the red - but they generate about ten times as much as they get from Uncle Sam. In a given year, they might GET 9 billion from Uncle Sam but generate 80 billion on their own.

The problem with the USPS is they don't function as a business, because they're compelled to meet the postal needs of everyone in the country - whereas other carriers can simply write off some rural areas as a waste of money.

I agree, however, that they have two many separate facilities but I am not sure how eliminating them would keep it efficient. If you've ever looked at tracking for some parcels you order, it's crazy how many places they go.

Power with Control
It my understanding that those IDs cost the government a couple hundred percent. Why?
Same reason aircraft parts cost a lot more than identical off the shelf parts. You need accountability back to the source and a "chain of custody" through the life cycle.

Anyone ever been to, or seen in person, one of these distribution centers? They are HUGE, MASSIVE, HUMONGOUS. Here is a Mail Processing Facility, and also a Business Mail Entry Unit, that was built in Henrico County Va, just outside Richmond. It is 719,000 square feet. That is 16.5 acres under roof. The newest of 60 planned regional processing centers that USPS wants to launch nationwide. This is where many things get lost, per goggle reviews anyway. And this is just one of many distribution centers in the Richmond area. Imagine these centers, large and small, all across the Nation, and then you'll see the magnitude the USPS deals with. Not defending them, just adding some context.

As someone who interacts with PAX personnel every day (or at least tries to) for work purposes and speaking of my own personal experience, I can say that WFH is a bust! Constant flow of unreturned calls and emails, never able to get answers from people, no-shows in meetings, on and on. Local stores PACKED at all hours of the day. I have 3 GOV employees in my neighborhood that are outside their houses doing yard work throughout the work day.

No one will EVER convince me that WFH is more productive. Not from what I have seen, heard, and experienced on a day-to-day basis.
