Hell

Does the threat of hell cause people to love God?

If it does, its for the wrong reason and sounds more like trying to aquire Fire Insurance. We should come to God broken, and in need of a savior realizing our sin and with genunie repentance. We should love God for his amazing grace and the work he did on the cross, to pay our debt and offer up everything we have as a mere pentace out of aperication.

But that's still fire insurance. We are driven to God because of our realization that our sins will send us to hell. We repent because we fear that pounishment. The work on the cross is about saving us from that fate. So it still boils down to the threat of hell.

Denying hell does not cause people to love God either.

No. The threat of hell does not cause people to love God, but it might make some look to God for forgiveness through God's love. Then, when they experience God's love they may love Him. God's forgiveness of His people is all through the Old and New Testaments. The gift of salvation is foretold in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New.

The lake of fire is a fact of the Bible. The eventual final destination for satan, his followers, and those humans that do not honor and embrace God and His way. Heaven, God's kingdom, is also a fact of the Bible and the eventual final destination for those that embrace God and His way. No middle ground. No limbo.

Couldn't people come to love God purely on His goodness toward them?

Sure. But leaving out any portion of the Bible is not correct for a Christian to do. Heaven and hell are as real and correct to discuss as the grace and love of God for His creation.

God is love. God is patient and forgiving. God is righteous and delivers His righteous vengeance on those that do not follow His will. Just as God gave us free will so we can love or not love Him, He has total dominion over His creation and can do with it and us as He pleases. He sets the rules of the universe and life. To leave out or ignore any part of God's revealed attributes is foolishness.
