I Make Diddly-Squat

Sneakers

Just sneakin' around....
I just loaded up TurboTax, but still missing a few key pieces of tax info, so can't really start yet. Curious how it will ask and treat the relief funds. Everything else should be the same as last year, no unemployment or other differences.

I'm too lazy to look up the number, but a TON of folks got unemployment in 2020. Knowing people, the vast majority of them didn't have taxes taken out. What's going to happen when they now have to pay up and don't have that money?

Politicians and bureaucrats don't think things through. It's like they have no concept of how normal people live their lives.

You are given a choice whether or not you want them withheld when you apply.

Would you rather the government just decree you must have them taken out?

Uh, yeah. They're gonna take it anyway, might as well take it up front.

It's not like people on unemployment will save it for tax time, and they can't invest it and make money, cause the banks are paying diddly-squat.

Why shouldn't someone have the right to invest those funds and then pay their taxes later if they want?

Who said they shouldn't?

This is what happens when you're programmed to hear codes and dog whistles - you forget how to comprehend plain English and just go with what the voices in your head are saying.

You did. You said it should be automatic since people cant be responsible. Then you claimed people should be able to choose. Which they are.

Why are you so mad all the time about everything?

Like you wouldn't complain if a penny was missing from your unemployment.

You're not too bright. The government makes you pay. You can put down 0 dependents but they still make your employer take funds from you whether you want them to or not.........if you are self employed and do not pay enough estimated taxes they penalize you.

And your point is?

If you collect unemployment they ask you if you would like the taxes withheld or would you like to pay them at tax time. Now the same people who believe in smaller government are saying the government should not give you that choice because you are too irresponsible.

Stimulus money is not taxable at the state level either. I believe she is talking about unemployment insurance. That has always been taxable income. The extra federal unemployment funds are also taxable income. Not good unless you saved some yourself. Maryland will withhold 10% for federal taxes but doesn't withhold anything for state/county taxes.

Yeah, i'm not sure how they could justify taxing them. They aren't income (wages, etc.), they aren't capital gains, they aren't passive income, they aren't a tax return (so still representative of prior taxable income), and if they were to tax it as a gift they would tax themselves...

Am I the only one who is thinking easyliving45 is direct blood relation to the 'Chris' dude who used to try to argue in circles? I'm thinking possible twin.

Maryland withheld 10% for Federal and 7.5% for State if you elected to have taxes withheld from Unemployment.
