Maryland withheld 10% for Federal and 7.5% for State if you elected to have taxes withheld from Unemployment.
They withhold state? Good to hear. Hopefully people took advantage of that, otherwise the tax bill will hurt.

Damned glad to meet you
Like you wouldn't complain if a penny was missing from your unemployment.

Why shouldn't someone have the right to invest those funds and then pay their taxes later if they want?
Collecting unemployment to invest it? You is sho'nuff livin' sleazy ain't choo Dickhead? Why don't you help clean up the Chesapeake Bay drainage as long as you're down in that gutter.

And your point is?

If you collect unemployment they ask you if you would like the taxes withheld or would you like to pay them at tax time. Now the same people who believe in smaller government are saying the government should not give you that choice because you are too irresponsible.
I guess I can’t compete with your knowledge of receiving unemployment. I’ve been working for over 50 years, never had that opportunity....you are so blessed

Yeah, i'm not sure how they could justify taxing them. They aren't income (wages, etc.), they aren't capital gains, they aren't passive income, they aren't a tax return (so still representative of prior taxable income), and if they were to tax it as a gift they would tax themselves...

Yeah, the 2020 stimulus checks were refunds of (pretend) overpayments of federal income tax.

What the law did was (1) provide eligible taxpayers a credit (not a deduction) against taxable income for 2020, (2) said let's pretend those taxpayers made an overpayment in the amount of the credit and (3) directed the Secretary of the Treasury to refund that overpayment to those taxpayers.

I SELECTED the option to withhold both federal and state taxes --- however - due to the complete f&ck up of the idiots in our state government - NO taxes were withheld.

Luckily, I withheld it myself to try and cover those taxes. :eyeroll:

Imagine having enough money where you don't have to work but you're getting unemployment which you don't need so you can invest it.
I was laid off when my employer was forced to shut down. Onwent on enemployment not knowing how long they would be shut down.

Luckily*, I had money in the bank to live on for the 6 weeks it took MD got their sh&t together and sent me my 6weeks of unemployment all at one time. Like in 1 week. Without taxes being withheld.

*I say luckily - but that wasn't luck. It was planned that I have money in reserve in case of an emergency.

Itemizing my deduction got me over the edge to getting a small refund both federally and from Maryland. I'd be happier about it if the reason why wasn't because I paid so much in real estate tax / mortgage interest that put me beyond the standard deduction. Staying alive sure is expensive.
