idiotic brown tourism road signs

Does anyone else feel like me, that many of the brown-colored Maryland tourism road signs (put up in 2007) were put up by IDIOTS? For example,

Coming north on Route 301 from the Harry Nice Bridge into Maryland by the Motel, a brown sign says to get to "Western Chesapeake Shore" turn right onto Route 234 Budds Creek Road. Don't they realize that Baltimore and Annapolis are located on the Western Chesapeake Shore? Are they directing all traffic going to Baltimore and Annapolis to leave 301 and turn onto Route 234 into St. Mary;'s County?

And, coming east on Hawthorne Road (225) at Route 301 in LaPlata by the Shell station, another sign says "Western Chesapeake Shore, turn right" onto Route 301 south (toward Virginia). Again, Baltimore and Annapolis are on the Western Chesapeake Shore. Why are they directing traffic headed for those cities, to go south toward the Harry Nice Bridge? The same sign also says to "Potomac Corridor, turn left" (north) and to "Patuxent Corridor, turn right (south). This is ambiguous, since parts of the Potomac River (like Leonardtown) are to the south, not the north. And parts of the Patuxent River (like Bowie, Laurel, and Upper Marlboro) are to the north, not the south.

Be thankful they're in English. For now.

the signs are designed to draw traffic (and money) into st. mary's county. with that goal in mind, the signs make perfect sense.

besides, if you're headed for baltimore or annaplois, you're probably going to follow signs that say "baltimore" or "annapolis" not "Western chesapeake shore"

Would THIS face lie?
Your Maryland tax dollars at work..I have a sign not too far from me that tells me the evacuation route from a place that I have lived for 60 years....If it wasn't for that sign, I could be stuck here in an emergency..

That's a good sign.

Well, at least I wrote and got M-DOT last year to correct the mileage sign on southbound Route 301 south of LaPlata. For years, it used to say "Richmond, 93 miles" when the 2 signs north of LaPlata said "Richmond 87 and 85 miles". So now they changed the southernmost sign to say "82" instead of "93" miles.

How many millions must have driven past there and never noticed the inconsistency, or never said anything to them about it.

The 2 mileage signs on northbound 301, north of 257 / 234, still contradict each other. One sign says that Baltimore is closer than the Bay Bridge. The other sign a few miles further, says the Bay Bridge is closer than Baltimore. Have none of the millions of drivers ever noticed this, either ?

never have been able to figure that one out. Evac signs all along 235, Rt 4, and Rt 234. Anyone that has lived in SOMD more than 6 months should realize by now that there are only 3 ways out of here, and they all go north.

You must be new here.

All highway design is done by special ed students.
:yeahthat:
While in college, I worked for a GIS company doing custom mapping for utilities and other clients. One of our jobs was to update the road files that MDOT provided. You would not believe the STUPID errors we found. One of the glaring errors was symbology for a culdesac in Baltimore Harbor.

Sure, we've noticed it but one must assume that the personnel that approved those signs are probably products of the government indoctrination centers (public schools) and as long as they felt good about them the details didn't matter. You're not one of those judgemental right-wingers, are you?
